Obama rightly banned gain of function research. Fauci et. al. used a third party company to get around the ban and fund that research in a lab in Wuhan, China. The lab fucked up, and one of the viruses escaped. I'm thinking that they were working on a lot worse shit than Covid because the Chinese government originally freaked the FUCK out, probably thought one of the really deadly strains released. Overlooking the fact that we were basically teaching our chief geopolitical rival how to engineer bioweapons because some bureaucrats got miffed about their pet projects getting shut down, it was gravely irresponsible.
Then the vaccines came out. Trump was retarded for doing Operation Warp Speed - a vaccine needs 3 to 10 years in testing before release for a very good reason. The vaccines for years were trumpeted as a way to stop the spread. Then, a pharma exec in a press conference in Europe a few years later
admitted flat out that they had never even tested to see if the vaccines could do such a thing. Pfizer made 80 billion on the vax with a full liability shield - you basically cannot sue for vaccine injuries like you can other medical malpractice. To contextualize this, the music industry usually makes a bit over 20 billion every year. This means that every celebrity musician, every recording exec, all the money and largesse per annum flowed into one company almost four times over. And that's just Pfizer.
When it comes to masks, anyone who knew anything about medical shit knew that they do nothing. The Chinese and Japanese wear them whenever they're sick and up until 2020 in Western scientific circles it was
de rigeur to mock this as scientifically illiterate, as the particle size of a virus is way too small for a surgical mask to do anything. Even at the start of 2020 the same
correct take was given - they do nothing. So what changed? Was there a Nobel Prize winning study that overturned decades of scientific consensus that these masks are useless? No. The best study on transmission was an MIT one which found that the best predictor of infection was how long you spent with an infected person in an enclosed space with unfiltered air. This is because breath is warm, so the virus particles tend to be carried up and then slowly drift down as the air cools if they aren't picked up by an air filtration system. Distancing/masks had no discernable effect on transmission, and there wasn't a single credible study that showed that they did. Bureaucrats flat-out admitted that they made up the 6 feet figure.
Overall it was an example of a large chunk of the general public trusting the political class in labcoats with religious fervor. Anyone tangentially related to the world of medicine knows that health bureaucrats are often people who couldn't cut it in academia or industry, not the creme de la creme of scientists.
