I mean that's Ukraine's choice. I don't know the history between Russian and Ukraine; I'd figured Ukraine is independent from Russia as its own nation.

In fantasy land that's certainly true, in reality though Ukraine joining NATO would be like the hypothetically independent nation of North Carolina joining an explicitly anti-US coalition.
