The memes are peak. Still buckbreaking people a year later lol.

It's a firm repudiation of the zog fantasy (nigger'd) and isekai slop we've been getting for years. Demons are demons, they are evil, you kill them on site. You don't fuck them because they're hot and "humans can be big meanies too!", you kill them. Elves are elves, dwarves are dwarves, they are not sub-saharan niggers. Niggers did not invent pointy eared forest elves or mountain dwelling dwarves in their cultural canon, they are not for niggers, simple as that. Elves and dwarves both share similarities with humanity, but in true Tolkienian fashion they are various shades of awkward and seemingly uncaring because of their cultural differences and longer lifespans.

Nations/castle towns in Frieren have their own banners and ensigns and there is even a basic monetary system. Each region is given its own theme, and comments are made about how even simple things like statue designs can change per area because some cities wanted to deify heroes like Himmel with stronger-looking aspects. There's a goddess religion in the show that, unlike what zog fantasy would do, focuses on the healing power of the goddess and the protection she gives to the faithful rather than some cliché evil Papist archetype plot.

It's so beautifully simplistic at times, and that's why it truly succeeds. It doesn't turn the Tolkien playbook on its head, it doesn't try to blacken a high fantasy world and subvert it into something low and made for literal mudmen. The show works so well because it provides the righteous Native European fantasy experience people have been missing since the early 2000s when the LOTR trilogy first released. It might be even longer for the nips, from what I hear Record of Lodoss War is their huge LOTR-inspired fantasy series, and that released in the early 90s.

I'd say that Dungeon Meshi and Faraway Paladin (which a lot of people seem to have slept on) also belong in the conversation and I'd like to see even more Fantasy Anime try to ape Dragonlance instead of Dragon Warror in the future.

Any advantage to BL-Ray over using USB media? If not, I would assume that's just a collector's item.
I mean if we're getting technical it lasts longer than data stored on a flash drive. It also has a very noticeable bit rate improvement over streaming, though I don't know how that translates to USB. There are fun things sometimes. Some disc's let you pick and choose the type of audio, like 5.1 or 2.0.

What I love about Frieren is how basic most of the spells she teaches Fern are. They don't go into the "Fear the man that has practiced one single punch 10 million times, instead of the man that has practiced every single punch technique once." philosophy and I love it.

If your demands for anime are "straightforward murder of fantasy savages", you could just watch Goblin Slayer and get the same product without having characters with zero personality pontificating on nothing.

I dare any Kiwi to watch Wild 7 Another without wanting to kill yourself. It's by the same people behind Genma Wars and I legit don't know which is worse. Have a taste (no .gifs to really drive it home, sorry):

The best Isekai that's LOTR inspired and is a better FATE/ is Drifters. Same mangaka who did Hellsing

Makes me almost want to watch it. I honestly thought it was just a flavor of the month isekai when it aired.

Lodoss War isn't really LOTR inspired, it's based on some guy's Dungeons and Dragons campaign which is why it comes off as disjointed and painfully generic. I mean it's golden compared to the average isekai slop but it is the most stereotypical attempt at high fantasy possible.

I'm watching it boys. Finally. 7 minutes in and the ADV dub is penetrating my fucking soul with memes. @Toji Suzuhara eat your heart out, I'm watching your series. God help me.
Hey man, if it makes you feel any better, Evangelion was like my 300th anime or so. Sometimes you just need to be in the right mood.

I didn't watch neither Perfect Blue nor Gurren Lagann till last year, so yeah.

Having watched Kill La Kill before Gurren Lagann though, I prefer KLK. GL is fun just for some secondary characters, I couldn't stand neither Simon nor Yoko.

The highlight character in Gurren Lagann for me.

I'm honestly kinda glad. It gives me a different perspective. I didn't grow up with the show, but I could probably tell you the basic story beats even before today, it's just that popular. That said, age, wisdom, it lets me see what the show is doing. I can see why it's popular. I've never seen another anime like it. It is anime, but it treats itself differently. I can't explain it.

I wish I could talk to someone whose legit first anime was Evangelion, and not because they were a kid or what-not. I'm super curious as to how they turned out from it.

Also one of my managers said he grew up with the anime. Like what the fuck? lol

And you probably never will even after your seventh watch. You ever choose to do a rewatch, definitely check it out subbed. Whole 'nother experience.
