NFHS is carried out by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and is one of the foremost Indian sources to study public health and evaluate existing policies. The survey is representative of households across India at both the state and the national level.

The researchers found out that between NFHS-III (2005-’06) and NFHS-IV (2015-’16), Indians in the 15-50 age bracket – with the exception of women between the ages 26-50 – have experienced a decline in their average height.

Women between 15-25 saw a decline in their mean height by 0.12 cm, while women between 26-50 showed an improvement by 0.13 cm. During the same period, men between 15-25 saw a decline of 1.10 cm in their mean height and those between 26-50 years had a decline of 0.86 cm.

Notably, disadvantaged groups have been especially impacted by this trend. For women in the ages 15-25, between NFHS-III and NFHS-IV, the average height of tribal women saw a decline of 0.42 cm while women from the poorest wealth fell by 0.63 cm. This is significantly worse than the average decline for the entire age group (0.12 cm).

Men between the age groups of 26-50 from urban areas saw the sharpest decline in average height, with the highest fall being 2.04 cm in Karnataka.

While I can't say for certain, the fact that this mud mask is some sort of traditional beauty treatment makes me strongly suspect there's cow dung involved. The Mughals were a highly advanced civilisation that in some ways were viewed as equals by the British (unlike the Hindus). We find that 0.038% of men from Punjab are 190.5cm or taller, which given the sex ratio of 895 females per 1000 males in Punjab works out to 5,608 Punjabis who are 6'3" or taller in the state of Punjab.

Of course, there are going to be caveats, not all Punjabis live in Punjab and this average height figure is for all ages, not younger cohorts who will be taller. But anecdotally speaking, the Punjabis in Canada are not really short, perhaps their turbans make them look more imposing than they are though.

I recommend everyone to read the book below. In the 19th century the scientific minds of the world knew that the inability to produce nitrates (fertilizer) in sufficient quantities guaranteed a level of food scarcity that would cause mass starvation even in Europe. As for several centuries large deposits of natural nitrates around the world had been harvested to exhaustion.

In comes a scientist and a chemical engineer in Germany who together invent the Fritz-Haber process to extract nitrates in effectively infinite quantities from the atmosphere. A foundational component of global society. As all countries in the world are utterly dependent on it for feeding their populations and without it the immense population growth of the 20th century (despite World Wars) would never have been possible.

One part to understand here is that by the end of WW1 the facilities created in Germany to conduct this process were so advanced that even when captured fully intact by the French the captains of industry in France and the UK had no comprehension of how it functioned and were wholly incapable of reverse engineering it. It was that far ahead of its time.

There are only 1.5B pajeets in the world because of the existence of this. It's hard to really put to words how much of a backwater China and India were at the start of the 20th century. Saying they were only 300 years behind the West is remarkably generous.
