Greenland is a bit of a mess, apparently as far as demographics go the first people to live there were replaced by some Paleo-Eskimos who were not related to the Inuit. They then left and the island was uninhabited when the Norse arrived. The ancestors of the modern day Inuit replaced the aforementioned Paleo-Eskimos in Arctic Canada and then moved to Greenland while the Norse were still there. The Norse on the island then disappeared by the 15th century (the Inuit remained though) and Scandinavians didn't try to resettle the place until the early 1700s.
