Chinese historical research is the most developed in the world, thanks to China having the most complete form of historical records in the world. In ancient China, historians could record all aspects of a dynasty's history in one book. Therefore, those historians only needed 26 books to record all aspects of China's history from the primitive era to the Qing Dynasty

These books usually consist of four parts

Emperor's History（纪）
The main content is the biographies of all the emperors of this dynasty, the major events that occurred during their rule, and the announcements of the policies they issued

elaborate（志）
The main content is to record the development of the system, economy, military, law, architecture, technology, culture and other aspects of this dynasty, as well as astronomical phenomena, territorial boundaries, and the responsibilities of various official positions

list（表）
The main content is to record the chronology of this dynasty, the family genealogy of the royal family, and the family genealogy of the hereditary nobles

biography（传）
It mainly includes the biographies of all the empresses, imperial concubines, princes, princesses and officials of the dynasty, as well as the biographies of the most famous philosophers, religious figures, local government leaders, assassins, rangers, businessmen, bandits and foreigners of the dynasty. In addition, immoral officials will be included in the Flatters biographies

Problem with ancient history books has always been that before the oral history was written down it got broken telephone'd to shit adding some personal flair depending on the story teller. From the primitive times to paper i mean, later on there are more sources where you can piece it together.

I wouldn't trust any history books if the CCP is involved though, they might select pieces here and there to suit their agenda and during cultural devolution they destroyed multiple historical sites. They are like ISIS destroying their own heritage because of bullshit reasons.

It was more like a pot slowly boiling over type of situation, all that was needed was one guy to blow the lid off and all hell broke loose. People were in hard times in the area where Heavenly Kingdom was founded.

Hard disagree, Islam has provided centuries of lulz while the Taiping Rebellion only gave us about 14.

Anyway yeah the point is, Chinese history is just a long chain of nothing happen occasionally broken up by some shitdick doing schizo shit and getting tens of millions killed.

There is also archaeology, which can confirm the accuracy of historical records

In fact, you can compare the ancient history books in Taiwan, China with those in Chinese Mainland

The Xin dynasty is interesting to read about, it's like the rise and fall of a Communist dictatorship despite taking place during the time of Jesus. They also had some cool coins.

Pressing hard X to doubt. Yeah they had their eunochs record information, but there's very little chance of that information not containing bias or getting altered along the centuries due to the nature of monarchy wanting to make themselves good and everyone beforehand look bad. You almost assuredly have better luck with European history since it has way varied sources to find a less biased middle ground.

I have been trying to find / remember the name of a great book I read in 2023 on Chinese Legalism.

It served both as an historical account of the Qin, an overview of Legalist philosophy, and Chinese history in general.

Any nerds out there who might know which one it could be?

It was written by a Chinese in this century.
