I always find it interesting, when talking about other countries, to look up their language's version of Wikipedia to see their perspectives on it. The Bangla version just seems to be a straight translation of the English language article, the Marathi version is clearly written natively and isn't as good, but does have an interesting anecdote about a Queen who refused Sati and it acknowledges the work Christian missionaries put in for calling it to end. Same with the Telegu article, which describes the ritual in more detail. The Urdu one goes into even more detail and is highly condemnatory in tone.

But the Hindi version is very short, and was very clearly written by an angry Dalit:

If I had to guess - Hindu nationalism pushing vegetarianism on everyone, including castes that traditionally did eat some meat. Meat consumption during childhood is correlated with height.

A funny example of the opposite is Japan in the Meiji Period - after the country opened up, the emperor promoted eating meat as he believed that one reason that westerners had developed so much was because of their diets. Thus Japan got 洋食 (lit. "western food" which includes red meat which used to be highly taboo in Japan). As a result, Japanese children experienced sustained height increases up until WW2. You might be surprised that many of the most iconic Japanese dishes which include meat are only ~150 years old and are actually Japanese-European fusion dishes.

And despite all of that, chinese citizens working in the US will throw a tantrum if you try to send them back. For every tech job in China, there's at least 10 people who qualify for it. China has a ridiculously overeducated modern population who are fleeing the ship like there's no tomorrow because of how disposable they are. China churns out tech grads like the US churns out useless degrees in the humanities.

In other news, tech development costs in China are quite low. It remains a mystery why.

The Hindus of the past three centuries are a shadow of their original selves. Sati and such, while it did exist in antiquity, was far rarer and for some dumbass jeet reason it gained even more prominence during the Colonial period as they must have thought they were sticking it to the Brits with their culture. As the British were so disgusted by it they outlawed it in India in 1829, so the anti-colonial position was to continue burning widows anyway.

Even the Sati article on Jewpedia mentions it. India today is the Third Age of Hinduism and does not resemble the culture that built the wonders of antiquity on the subcontinent. Remember the whole point of endogamy and castes was to prevent race mixing (lol).

I'm very much skeptical that Hindus of the past were any better than their descendants. I'm even more skeptical that they actually built even a fraction, if anything at all, of the actually impressive infrastructure that still remains in India.

To add some context, the Tokugawa Shogunate banned the eating of meat and even the mere killing of animals for 2 centuries. Even before the ban the Japanese didn't eat some kinds of meat but with the ban even that was gone. Mostly, many people disobeyed the ban but the average peasant still had to be content with just porridge slop. Nowadays, other kinds of meat combined are more popular than fish in Japan (especially chicken and pork), but looked at individually fish is still the most consumed meat in Japan.
