When I heard "research" I assumed "military research" and thus the meetings were to figure out what to tell people, stalling, figuring out if they should say it's military at all, arguing they don't want to give anything away at all... etc. But that's a gut feeling nothing more.

I considered that but I directly remember officials saying that didn't know who they belonged to and there were concerns that drones were going over military bases. Not only that, but if they were our own drones conducting "research" then why did they go about it in the worst way possible? Everyone saw them and were scared and asking questions. If your goal is to do some secret research then they failed big time.

I interpreted that a bit differently. John was horrified by modern society, and attempted to withdraw from it by hiding. Modern society found him, and he killed himself. It was a subtle call to action from Orwell, that you can't ignore or escape the technology and societal changes of the future, you must work to mold and change the direction of technology and society lest you wind up with the bad ending.
I had noticed that a lot of newer woke shit would have a character give a long LGBTQWTFBBQ speech in the middle of the show that seemed out of place and apropos of nothing. Usually the character would come out of the closet, cry about how hard it is, get head pats from another character, and the story would resume with no further reference to this odd and out of context scene.
Consider this: Joseph and Mary went to Jerusalem in order to register Joseph's citizenship by registering with Caesar Augustus' census. The Roman Empire required citizens to register in their city of origin. Joseph was a relative of King David, and Bethlehem was King David's city, so they had to do it there. Mary and Jesus' citizenship was based on Joseph's citizenship as head of the family. They made the long, difficult journey in order to preserve their legal citizenship status and obey the law.
