One of the problems with the internet is that information lives for a long time. This is good, but also means things can become outdated. This also happens in real life where people know of a topic but then never update their frame of reference.
I was curious if other people have experienced this, and what examples people have.
While this thread is not about The Mandela Effect, it crosses over with this.
I'll start with three (or more like five).
Cheap Minis
What started me down this road was a video about RuneWars. A fantasy miniatures board game that I assume failed to find an audience, because was sold off really cheap at some point, As a result was recommended as a great source cheap Dungeons and Dragons figures. That was five years ago, and now the game is hard to find, and when I do see it, it goes for RRP or higher. Yet searching for budget Dungeons and Dragons miniatures (or cheap miniatures in general) will bring up lots of threads, videos, and recommendations for RuneWars. Oddly enough, the video I watched specifically mentioned that the bargain price is unlikely to last forever.
The same happens with Warhammer. I often see post recommending a starter box that has long been out of print. (I think it was the 9th edition Marines vs Necrons box, if curious)
Star Wars Legion is, or was, cited as a super cheap minis game. These days, it's more expensive than Warhammer.
VR
I don't own a VR headset. I'm not a shill for VR. When I talk about VR, there are people who still assume the VR landscape is as it was in 2016. A bunch of overpriced tech demos and no games. When I, someone who doesn't even own a headset, starts listing games for it, (Half Life Alyx, Boneworks, Walking Dead Saints and Sinners, Beat Saber) it starts with dismissals like "that's one" or "that doesn't count", but as I keep listing games (Into The Radius, Hotdogs Horseshoes And Handgrenades, VTOL, I Expect You To Die, After The Fall, Arizona Sunshine, Vertigo Remastered) eventually they just give up and change the subject.
PewDiePie
We all know PewDiePie. The most popular YouTuber, plays horror games and pretends to be scared by them, right? Except no. PewDiePie is retired and is living in Japan with his family, occationally posting vlogs about him learning to draw and taking up climbing. Even before his retirement, he was making all sorts of content for years. It would be like defining Michael Jackson as that kid from The Jackson Five. I think most know at this point Mr Beast is the top Youtuber, but PewDiePie is number 9 according to Wikipedia.
