There are only a tiny number of people smart and dextrous enough to be surgeons. There is no way to increase the supply of doctors so that everyone get the highest-quality care that is technologically feasible.
True, but you can still offer incentives and support to encourage as many of those people as possible to become surgeons, at least reducing the strain on the system. And like I said, that's a rational point for you to raise, and the people we're talking about aren't rational enough to reach this point of the hypothetical.

So I am going to go on a bit of a rant here

Earlier in this thread, I mentioned how democracy is treated less like a system of governance but more like a god. I said that as a joke but the more I think about it that isn't far off from the truth. Anytime that there is political figure that has a opinion that is slightly to the right, they are labeled as a threat to democracy and must be silenced, any time you say some edgy jokes labelled as a threat to democracy, and so on. The left despite its hatred of religion has created a new religion without even thing about it, and their god is democracy, the heretics are the far right and the minortioes are the priest caste you can't criticize or be punished. The far right in this case is anyone who is normal effectively, the irony in all of this is that a democracy is meant to allow everyone a voice and yet the current religion of democracy has cut the toungs out of millions.
C.S. Lewis had a bit about this in his epilogue to the Screwtape Letters, "Screwtape Proposes A Toast". In it, Screwtape encourages the rest of the demons in Hell to start encouraging the use of "democracy" as a shibboleth.

He doesn't mean "encourage popular sovereignty". He means "use it as a buzzword to enforce conformity and reduce everything to the lowest common denominator."

For example: "hold back the gifted child because he makes the other children feel bad, and that's not 'democratic'".

"Nooooo you can't use copyrighted IP to train an AI model nooooooooooooooooooo."

Sam Altman should literally kill himself, in real life, like with a gun.

Yeah once you meet someone with ODD you realize it's real as fuck. It's not just about "not listening" lmao, kids with it are actual nightmares to raise and be around and it never gets better. It's basically borderline for kids.
I’m as skeptical of SSRIs as any sensible person but I’m fearful of overcorrecting. Some seem to think there are only healthy people and retarded invalids who need 24/7 care, but there are a lot of productive people in between who can do better on medication. Are they perfect? No, absolutely not. Do we need to stop the over-diagnosing and overprescribing? Without question. But I’ve said it before, medication (healthcare in general really) is a balancing act of costs and benefits, and there are many for whom the benefits outweigh the costs. I just don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I’m not talking about exclusively SSRIs but psychiatric meds in general. Did name myself after one, after all.

I don't really care about the drama here, but AOC.. It's 'whose tweets were'.

Give AOC a break when it comes to grammar/punctuation/usage - after all, she is the product of a NY public school. AOC's curriculum probably spent too long covering important topics such as every single known gender (of which there's at least 65) instead of, you know - teaching her how to write 🤔

Ive worked with people with ODD and OCD there was something very wrong with all of them so i believe its real.
real psycho disorders -- the ones that interfere with your life to a detrimental degree -- are relatively obvious to a trained psychiatrist. otherwise what's the point of the training?

here ovey for fatpat
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:

Section 1. Purpose. My Administration has fought and will continue to fight anti-Semitism in the United States and around the world. On December 11, 2019, I issued Executive Order 13899, my first Executive Order on Combating Anti-Semitism, finding that students, in particular, faced anti-Semitic harassment in schools and on university and college campuses. Executive Order 13899 provided interpretive assistance on the enforcement of the Nation’s civil rights laws to ensure that they would protect American Jews to the same extent to which all other American citizens are protected. The prior administration effectively nullified Executive Order 13899 by failing to give the terms of the order full force and effect throughout the Government. This order reaffirms Executive Order 13899 and directs additional measures to advance the policy thereof in the wake of the Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023, against the people of Israel. These attacks unleashed an unprecedented wave of vile anti-Semitic discrimination, vandalism, and violence against our citizens, especially in our schools and on our campuses. Jewish students have faced an unrelenting barrage of discrimination; denial of access to campus common areas and facilities, including libraries and classrooms; and intimidation, harassment, and physical threats and assault. A joint report by the House Committees on Education and the Workforce, Energy and Commerce, Judiciary, Oversight and Accountability, Veterans’ Affairs, and Ways and Means calls the Federal Government’s failure to fight anti-Semitism and protect Jewish students “astounding.” This failure is unacceptable and ends today.

Sec. 2. Policy. It shall be the policy of the United States to combat anti-Semitism vigorously, using all available and appropriate legal tools, to prosecute, remove, or otherwise hold to account the perpetrators of unlawful anti-Semitic harassment and violence.

Sec. 3. Additional Measures to Combat Campus Anti-Semitism. (a) Within 60 days of the date of this order, the head of each executive department or agency (agency) shall submit a report to the President, through the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, identifying all civil and criminal authorities or actions within the jurisdiction of that agency, beyond those already implemented under Executive Order 13899, that might be used to curb or combat anti-Semitism, and containing an inventory and analysis of all pending administrative complaints, as of the date of the report, against or involving institutions of higher education alleging civil-rights violations related to or arising from post-October 7, 2023, campus anti-Semitism.
(b) The report submitted by the Attorney General under this section shall additionally include an inventory and an analysis of all court cases, as of the date of the report, against or involving institutions of higher education alleging civil-rights violations related to or arising from post-October 7, 2023, campus anti-Semitism and indicate whether the Attorney General intends to or has taken any action with respect to such matters, including filing statements of interest or intervention.
(c) The Attorney General is encouraged to employ appropriate civil-rights enforcement authorities, such as 18 U.S.C. 241, to combat anti-Semitism.
(d) The report submitted by the Secretary of Education under this section shall additionally include an inventory and an analysis of all Title VI complaints and administrative actions, including in K-12 education, related to anti-Semitism — pending or resolved after October 7, 2023 — within the Department’s Office for Civil Rights.
(e) In addition to identifying relevant authorities to curb or combat anti-Semitism generally required by this section, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Education, and the Secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with each other, shall include in their reports recommendations for familiarizing institutions of higher education with the grounds for inadmissibility under 8 U.S.C. 1182(a)(3) so that such institutions may monitor for and report activities by alien students and staff relevant to those grounds and for ensuring that such reports about aliens lead, as appropriate and consistent with applicable law, to investigations and, if warranted, actions to remove such aliens.

Sec. 4. General Provisions. (a) Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect
(i) the authority granted by law to an executive department or agency, or the head thereof; or
(ii) the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.
(b) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.
(c) This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

they already do this in high tax jurisdictions. your property tax bill shows you how much debt is associated to your property value. nobody gives a shit because america is not a democracy and you're never voting yourself a smaller government.
Have seen such things on the property tax bill. I want those spending the money to realize just how many taxpayers it will take to fund the various spending measures.

People do, in fact, care. If you pay taxes you want that money spent wisely. And many spending measures, when presented to the voters, lose at the ballot box.

A lot of mental illness diagnoses would be better treated with non-pharmaceutical treatments instead. We presently have a push to describe maladaptive behavior caused by real world problems as mental illnesses or developmental disorders because it's easier to medicate and assign vague diagnoses than fix the real issues. No one wants to handle the children of single mothers, kids growing up socially isolated and acting like retarded autists, or the normalization of violence in particular demographics. Much easier to just say BPD, autistic, or basketball american instead.
