The Catechism of the Catholic Church in paragraph 2489 states that "No one is bound to reveal the truth to someone who does not have the right to know it."
Interesting. Though I have to assume that that is not intended as a convenient, twistable rationalization for people trying to grift based on weaseling and lies and omissions.
Also pretty fucking sure that God is smarter than Nick's "clever" (unclever) word games. Pretty sure my shoe, is, too, though the wages of sin against my shoe are somewhat smaller than those against God...seems as though someone
else is "treading on dangerous ground."*. As always, Nick's words reveal much, little of which is what he intended.
Indeed, the earlier part of that section makes clear it is about discretion with other people's information:
2489 Charity and respect for the truth should dictate the response to every request for information or communication. The good and safety of others, respect for privacy, and the common good are sufficient reasons for being silent about what ought not be known or for making use of a discreet language.
Oh, AND!
That section of the Catholic Catechism footnotes to Proverbs 25: 9-10, which states (NRSV):
9Argue your case with your neighbor directly,
and do not disclose another’s secret;
10or else someone who hears you will bring shame upon you,
and your ill repute will have no end.
Some translations lean in even hard to the going to court kind of "arguing your case," which is funny in this case, but most importantly, the gist of it is not disclosing OTHER PEOPLE'S information. And that if you spill others' secrets, it is your own reputation and quality compromised.
He reads the Bible and religious texts as well as he does law.
