When he reviewed Double Dragon, one of the characters was named Bimmy. He makes it a point in the video to laugh at the typo and ever since it's been a sort of in-joke with the people that watch his content. When I used to watch his stuff we would call em that cause of that gag.
So now people just call James "Bimmy"? That's weird.
Fans and former-fans joke that the James that made 'good' content was abducted and replaced with a different person who puts out the less enjoyable AVGN content of today, they call this replacement Bimmy. Ya see James = Jimmy, his brother Billy = Bimmy. Hope that helps.
The "Bimmy" disdainful moniker originates from a hate subreddit called r/TheCinemassacreTruth.
It's lore on here has been surely documented, but essentially it came into existence when Rolfe's second-in-command, Mike Matei (Bugs Bunny, The Joker, etc from some of the older AVGN vids) started banning Redditor critics from his official sub for criticizing the drop in quality of the content. And a bizarre subplot where Mike got intoxicated one night and posted an alleged picture of his huge penis (that was pulled from gay porn) to pone some of his critics.
Realizing his error in association with the family-friendly AVGN brand, Matei as mod tried to scrub its existence from the Internet and banned anyone who mentioned it.
The refugees formed the r/TCT sub to discuss what happened, criticize the censorship, alog Mike & James, etc. The sub pretty quickly became repetitive, unfunny reposting of the memes critical of Mike & James.
Around the same time, James completely changed the structure of his channel without publicly discussing the change. Old friends and channel contributors like Bootsy (from Board James & Bootsy beats Battletoads) and Kyle Justin (who wrote the AVGN theme song, guitar guy behind the couch) either moved on or were pushed out. Mike Matei himself started streaming more independently and contributed less to AVGN until leaving almost entirely beyond providing game footage.
Suddenly, fat and uncharismatic people started appearing in his content without explanation or introduction. One would assume they were Rolfe's friends as well. But in fact, Rolfe had signed a brand management deal with a former minor AVGN contributor Ryan (who later trooned out). Rolfe, claiming burnout, essentially Krusty-the-Klowned his whole operation, showing up only to woodenly deliver his AVGN lines while all creative and behind-the-scenes control of his channel was subcontracted to an amateurish and devoid of talent management company that filled screentime with fat unlikable nerd employees who were paid to appear as his friends.
Around this time, leaks emerged that Rolfe didn't actually like vidya and hadn't since the N64 era. The channel started focusing on sloppy movie reviews, music content from Rolfe's cringy video game cover music band, podcasts, etc. The quality of AVGN episodes also fell off between James' dispassion, new management, loss of old characters, running the channel like a revenue-model and simply running out of funny retro games to rip on.
The spurned r/TCT community was savage in their alogging and critiquing of the change in Rolfe and his content, many feeling betrayed that he had sold out and that the literal angry nerd gamer he portrayed in the aughts was actually a literal sperg cuck who was punching a clock and stopped caring about vidya since the death of the NES.
Hence, the "Bimmy" insult was forged in the autist alog Redditor ovens.
If this was true he would have retired the character, started living off investments (being AVGN must be profitable, otherwise why do it for so long) and leave this washed-up toy industry to predditors who will do us all a favor and kill it.
As mentioned above and extensively in this thread, James went a different route in the late 2010s by selling the AVGN IP to a trustfund inexperienced troon that established Screenwave Media, a MCN YT management company.
He pushed out all his old college contributors and handed over creative control & day-to-day management of his brand to an amateur company that stuck a whole slew of fat, blackhole "Slobs" to inexplicably start cohosting his content with him.
They tried to diversify away from the old & sagging AVGN retrogame review model by expanding his movie reviews, starting a podcast, doing brand deals, Let's Play etc.
But James and the new management company tried to do it unannounced & surreptitiously. A significant portion of his old fanbase hated the change and went full alog.
It created an AVGN civil war of sorts between uncritical simps who believed heckin' wholesome James could do no wrong and angry chud Redditors who literally wanted James & AVGN to "Go Back to the Past" that could never be again.
