Marvel Cinematic Universe

I wouldn't say they fucked with it back then. "Weird guy is obsessed with MJ and wants her" is a well they return to a few times throughout the marriage but, iirc, they're never treated as "oh, no, Peter's about to get cucked!"
In that story arc Mary Jane was hell bent on not fucking him and by proxy cucking Peter. To where at the end she choose to go from being a multi-millionaire to almost literally penniless just to never have deal with him ever again.

That's what I mean, back then threats to Peter and MJ's relationship weren't treated as a shitty, mean-spirited way to shit on Peter like they are today, but instead were regular plots designed to give MJ an antagonist to overcome.

Nah, he's pretty consistently been portrayed as a genius, even back during the Lee & Ditko days. Made his web shooters and web fluid himself back when he was 15(ish) and constantly would whip up weird science shit to defeat his villains("anti-magnetic inverter" to defeat Vulture; finished Curt Connors antidote to cure him of his Lizard form), and he was always portrayed as top of his class, with most of his teachers loving him. To top it off, his parents were super spies.
Sam Raimi had the right idea with the organic webshooters. Peter being a megagigagenious that can manufacture military blacksite grade chemicals in his basement out of cleanex and soap at the age of 15 completely fucks with the idea of that anyone could be spiderman and raises multiple questions about his poverty and general life direction, organic webshooters also make stories about his psychology affecting his powers hit much much harder.

It is insane that "A spider bit him and now he can shoot grappling hooks out of his hands" is a more grounded alternative compared to what the most popular variant of the character actually is.

Spiderman fans won't accept this but its true.

That's on subsequent writers deliberately choosing to keep Peter a poor loser, instead of having him actually make money off his inventions and attain a degree of stability in life, as well as marriage and children.

Marvel intentionally changes things in their trailers to mislead the audience. One example was when they showed Bruce Banner as the Hulk in the Infinity War trailer, but in the actual film, he was in the Hulk suit and scared of Thanos. It would be interesting to see a Blu-ray release of the movie with both the original version and the reshot footage, especially with commentary about how much money they spent and the reasons for the reshoots. However, Disney would never admit or allow it.
I miss that shit man. I remember when movies did that and it was fascinating. One particular Arnold movie (sabotage) had a DVD extra that had an alt 20 min ending where he turned heel. Totally understand why they cut it, but it was entertaining to watch.

Disney would make so much money by having this shit as DVD extras. Remember how rise of Skywalker was supposed to have 3 different cuts? I know for a fact there's one in the vault somewhere where they blew up the falcon and killed off all the OT characters

I think making money from the web shooters would attract too much attention to his real identity. You know. using the same substance that Spidey is known to use will cause people to think. I do agree that he could modify the formula to fool people or invent other things that, when brought to the market and can be bought by everyone, will give him both money and an alibi.

I stand by my position that Peter Parker being a genius while not being conventionally successful and not having a wife and kids all makes sense if you accept that he cares more about being Spider-Man than any of those things. It's like that -- whelp I was going to reference a panel and I googled it and somebody already made this so here you go

Peter is smart - maybe not Reed or Stark levels of smart, but he's up there, and there's no reason he can't develop other useful inventions.

Yeah, that would make sense if the same thing kept happening to the other capes, yet we see them lead successful double lives, with the odd rough patch.

I have nothing against Peter suffering setbacks, but it's been 50 years and the guy is still a loser for no other reason than Marvel first not wanting to "alienate" the audience by making him grow up, and then later on just shitting on him because he's a White, straight protagonist and is actively hated by his writing team.

I understand that there are people that actually prefer Peter always getting fucked over with his pathological need to sacrifice himself, and that my preference is subjective, but I'd just like to see the character move on from where he was back when I was a kid and watching the 90s Spider-Man.

I like it as a commentary on that proclivity towards martyrdom. This is the life that pathological self-sacrifice gets you. You never gain something but that you lose something, you live by the sword you die by the sword. In order to move on he would have to actually address that in himself. Which would be an excellent story, but it would also effectively be the end of his character as a parable in my opinion, I don't think he'd have anywhere compelling to go after that except happily ever after, which is why we notably see it in stories where he's passing the reigns to somebody else. I would rather see him make his peace with the fact that by pursuing his extraordinary calling/passion he's necessarily going to miss out on aspects of the ordinary human experience, and just fully embrace it. But I'm repeating myself.

All that said I haven't read a single capeshit comic released after maybe 2012/2013 so I have no skin in the game.

I remember Tom DeFalco once talking about how Spider-Man works best with responsibilities heaped onto him, which is why he liked the idea of him being a married father, since he'd have responsibilities to both his wife and child. Those sort of struggles are, of course, alien to the modern man-child writer, so instead they just make him a likewise loser man-child who struggles because he's a constant failure.

Hot take but the last time Spider-Man was good was the cartoon Spectacular Spider-Man. Can't remember a single thing I've watched, read, or played related to Spider-Man in the past decade that treated him with respect or wasn't carried by better past Spider-Men like No Way Home, and the comics have sucked ass since like the mid-2000s.

Its time to just come to terms with the fact that Spider-Man and Marvel as a whole is fucking dead.

Can't wait for fantastic four to come out, everyone knows the normies will eat that garbage right the fuck up. this is going to be an amazing summer for bullshit! probably the most stacked blockbuster season since 2019. no more strikes or covid fuckery so everything is going great. in general i feel like trump's optimism is infecting everything else. the black captain america film might flop super hard though. i suspect 700m or less box office gross. this piece of shit movie should have come out 2 years ago, we've hit peak nigger fatigue.

why didn't they make webshooters. reed could have just reversed engieneered those things and let some random asshole use them instead. Peter's only special ability is sticking to walls. the problem with genuis characters is that its much easier to recreate something than create something. especially when its something a high school kid created.

As I said earlier, the stories turn into whether he turns into Walter White or not. And even if he doesn't, being Spiderman also makes him an absentee father too. It's one thing to stand up Mary-Jane on a date, it's much worse to not pick up the kids from school. It'd actually be an interesting story for his kids to grow up to be villains because Peter isn't around for them growing up, but no one would touch that idea because it's too tragic and plot-altering for American comic books.

Thing looks cool, I'm guessing he looks shorter than Sue because he's standing further back?

Thing isn't meant to be super tall, he's just 6' in the comics before that secondary cosmic enhancement (in the 80s when he was looked like he was covered in pyramids) made him Hulk-sized. He's just thick in rockform.

Teaser for Fantastic 4 is out.

Not bad, honestly. I’m glad it wasn’t chock-full of Joss Whedon quips undercutting serious moments (though I’m sure there’s gonna be some in the movie). Cool we finally see Galactus up on the big screen, my only complaint is the casting of Pedro Pascal (he ain’t even a bad actor, I just don’t see him as Reed.) Perhaps I’ll like him more when I see the movie, but he only gets a few lines in the trailer and we don’t even see him use his powers, what a gyp!
