People have always hated gaming journalism for being biased and paid off by game corporations, and an incident where a journo gave positive coverage to an indie game in exchange for sex from it's developer got people in arms. The indie dev in question was a woman, and made it a "chuds hate women in games!" issue and the other journos (and Wikipedia) ran with that narrative. It eventually spun into progressivism, politics, feminism, DEI, woke, and so on in games being exposed to a lot of people. For many, it was their first foray into politics and the shittiness of the liberals that wield identity as a cudgel.
