Flagellant religious movements popped up at many times and in many cultures throughout history. I'm convinced the modern left is just a secular incarnation of the same core worldview and motivations because religion doesn't have the cultural cachet it once did.

It's really brilliant on Netanyahu's part. It's funny, a trophy from a really successful military op, and a little threatening. I didn't know much about Bibi's diplomacy, but that's really a brilliant gift from his point of view..
