One of the things that makes troons seethe is that no matter how much effort they put into looking like real life blow up dolls, they will never be more of a woman than an actual woman. An actual woman can be fat, ugly, old, have short hair, have body hair, look "mannish", etc etc etc, and be everything that they despise and look down on. And yet, that woman is still a woman, and they are not, because the state of being female has nothing to do with the way you look.

I think a lot of people looked at the issue (and probably a lot of other issues) and figured that it was a small enough group of people that there wouldn't be a real chance of blowing past 'reasonable accommodations'. Because it seems like it should have been incredibly easy to limit trans nonsense just by saying 'no' to obviously unreasonable requests/demands. Someone wants to change the way they dress and the name they call themselves? Sure, we can play along with that. Someone says their self-identity should therefore allow them into sex-restricted spaces? No. No need to be mean about it, just a gentle-but-firm 'no' should have been enough to keep trans athletes out of women's sports and gendershit out of schools.

And most people probably didn't think it would take more than that, so they probably figured that if people were saying 'yes' to it that maybe the requests were reasonable despite their misgivings. So trans stuff got to the point where it's demonstrable harmful to increasingly large numbers of people and will take some effort to roll back to reasonability.
