Their entire lifestyle IS weird escapism, and thus they end up super focused on fantasy rather than reality. They'll obsess over a piece of fiction that resonates with them and use it as some weird skinsuit until they find a new toy.

Most of them were just the awkward person that somehow thinks they deserve to be the center of attention by doing minimal things in the hopes it impresses everyone. It's why most of them make a big deal about being trans and want the world to give them standing ovations for being "stunning and brave". They're the opposite type of nerd that instead of a person who just wants to be left along and like nerdy shit they make it entirely who they are as a person and annoy people. In their head it's because peolpe don't like them for being nerdy and as a person so it's a personal attack but it's like no.

As a nerd, for fuck sake not everyone wants to hear about how much you like Star Wars. As you said it's a skinsuit because they don't get it's not that you are into the thing that is a problem you're freaking annoying about how much you like it to the point where again it's just entirely who you are and peolpe just don't wanna deal with you just never shutting up about what you're interested in.

like many nerds who probably grew up in like the late 90s and early 2000s i was bullied but you learn by the time you get into high school to take it. Since in my head the real world doesn't care who is picking on you so there is no crying to teacher or momma you take it on the chin and move forward because you have better things to do. These are the kids that were bullied but never got these lessons to grow up and move on so as you said they insulate and stay in their head way into adulthood. They become so bitter to the world that now the world owes them a collective apology and by not apologizing you are against who they are or the cause they are a part of. Being silent even makes you guilty of imagined crimes that you didn't even know or care about because they feel because those few times where nobody cared about them struggling in highschool that means the world is out to get them.

Bullying has always been a part of growing up because whether it's other kids or your siblings how you handle it and how others handle it can shape you. But to me bullying is majority a one man project because the person has to take the initiative to try and stop it. The bullied nerds have to share a same room with these types and it causes friction because they're relatively not the same in a few ways but are in many ironically. I'm 100% sure a big chunk of troons were originally the kind of bullies that abused the 0 tolerance policy shit, not the awkward kids. I don't know of any right-leaning indie devs with popular games, though. Only one I know is Scott Cawthon and that was only revealed many years after his game was already a leading internet icon. Dude's gotten his generational wealth and most people don't really care about his views. The only ones who care are the raging Twitter/Tumblr users who hold grudges like mafia members and most likely engage in other meaningless dribble that most people would forget in a week while they take a millenium.
