The cream of the German crop were fighting the Soviets in eastern Europe and we got the crumbs from fighting the occupying forces of France, Italy and the rest of Europe. Even when in Germany proper we were not fighting them at their best.
Russia fought at least 3.5 million German troops along with allies (Finland and Italy among others) in the eastern front. The Western front had 1.9 million troops and they were spread THIN from having to defend all the territory they conquered. Not to mention poorly managed, Hitler wasted entire divisions on defending hopeless (encircled French ports) or irrelevant ( the channel islands) areas of strategic interest. Also the Russians had been fighting the Germans for two years longer then the USA, which launched its first land invasion on Italy in 1943 and only launched overlord in 1944.
Let's say the Nazis knock out the Russians early on. Now we have do deal with the freed up Nazi planes, tanks, and divisons that were previously destroyed. Now add up all the crazy ass Nazi superweapons that were developed in the last years of the war that have more time breath and be refined as American forces slog across Europe. ( Assuming they can establish a breachhead)
What happens when all that gets brought bear on 1.6 million men that don't have as much experience or combat doctrine? An absolute bloodbath. I won't say we couldn't possibly win on paper, but I don't know if we would have the endurance or fortitude to handle the losses.
Yes the Soviets fucked up hard in the beginning with shitty generals and yes they did need our equipment to win. But they produced the greatest rags to riches general of WW2

The Russian army reorganized and bulldozed the best of the Germans. They innovated, they adapted tactics and actually established an effective chain of command. If they had simply just thrown all their forces in the meat grinder continuously they never would have won. They made the enemy come to them, fight for every piece of land and then struck when all reserves and energy had been committed in concentrated assaults and encirclements led and planned by Zhukov.
That's how the soviets broke the deadlock and won the war.
To end my WW2 sperging. The Russian army has a proud tradition of getting the blown out in the opening of disadvantageous engagements... Before coming back with adapted tactics to absolutely fucking destroy their enemies. Underestimate them and you've already lost.
