Comparing pennies to their cost of manufacture never made much sense anyway. Coins are used in thousands of transactions during their 30-50 years in circulation, while a paper dollar bill is lucky to last 7 years without falling apart. That penny probably amounted to $50 dollars worth of transactions in its lifetime, who cares if it's initial cost was three cents or whatever?

As of 2024 Pennies cost 3 cents to make and Nickels cost 11.5 cents to make.
