If Staph’s neighbor truly entered their apartment uninvited, it highlights the performative nature of their oppression. I see two Staphs. Online Staph constantly shares how terrifying it is to exist with their laundry list of labels, as if danger is an unavoidable certainty. According to them, death lurks around every corner simply because they exist.
Real-World Staph, however, wears as many identifying pins, badges, and patches as possible—literally labeling themselves. Their hats become billboards. They play dress-up in the park, chant and beat a drum on the street, and approach strangers unsolicited to initiate conversations about all forms of faux-gay-silliness. And the cherry on top? They head home and don’t lock their door.
Staph’s actions are glaringly at odds with their words.
