Nah, even back in the jailbait days the majority of Reddit was fairly normal
A lot of the stuff that is cringy in hindsight was no different than the shit that went on 4chan in 2006, the only difference is that it had user IDs attached and upvotes.
Back in the meme base days Reddit was just another truck stop. It metastasizing into its current form is something that has to be studied.

I still don't understand why they did that, nor was anyone ever really able to provide a good answer. The AMAs were a big draw to reddit there for a while, and Taylor was a great writer. She managed to take the guests' answers and maintain their personalities in a way that made them fun to read.
The theory that makes the most sense with what we know from that time period and of the people running the site, is that Alexis Ohanian is an insecure bitch and saw Victoria as a possible threat to his power and influence; or that he saw her comfortable and happy in the AMA sphere interacting with celebrities and politicians and wanted that for himself.

I don't remember this being mentioned before (maybe it was but not discussed extensively), but I was looking for something totally unrelated and stumbled upon r/JoeRogan. You would think this would basically be a fan subreddit, with discussion of guests, etc. But reddit is such an echo chamber that its basically a hate subreddit, with the most popular posts are 'Fact Checking the latest Joe Rogan podcast' which seems to be a reoccurring series or various posts dunking on him.

Rogan's sub turned on him for very good reasons that have nothing to do with politics. It's more to do with him flooding the comedy scene with dozens of shit tier stand up comedian cronies who aren't funny and who also run a mafia style scam game of podcasts where if you don't suck their unfunny dicks you'll get blackballed from the circuit.
He destroyed any good will he had by developing an ego the size of Texas, often referring to himself and his friend's comedy as "the last line of defense of free speech" then ruining his podcast by getting "the bag" and visibly checking out and not giving a shit anymore. He won't pay attention to anything his guests say and on the rare occasion he does he'll just respond with something banal and dumb.
He then decided now was the time to release a new comedy special that was so bad even his friends roasted him for it. Then complained that "woke comedy" was responsible for his own special being one of the lowest rated comedy specials in history. As if Jim Gaffigan's inoffensive comedy special that was half full of fucking Hot Pocket jokes wasn't better than everything he's ever done in his career.
Was never a fan but could tolerate some of his podcasts. Now can't even do that.
