Finally decided to start unbound....jesus I am not even at the first gym and this game looks unreal. It is even hard to imagine how they did in a GBA hack. The amount of features shown even in the prequel is amazing. As I was making my character I thought: will they do my mother with these features? And they fucking did.

And I guess it came out in 2016 or something. Jesus they are amazing.

I think I have dementia. I played this in early 2023 and completely forgot.

In the original TCG, they should have made Blastoise have a Grass weakness, so there's a "rock-paper-scissors" thing going on with the final evolutions of the starters. But nah, they made him have a Lightning weakness instead. Also Gyarados should have had a Lightning weakness, but nah, he's got a Grass weakness instead. Design mistakes maybe?

And I am done with Recharged yellow.

Jesus I fucking hate Kanto, this region fucking sucks dick. The author wanted to make a vanilla version so most pokemon locations are similar to the original games (and those were fucking shit like one billion pidgeys)

There are some cool features like the ability to use various selected itens at once, never saw this and it is amazing.

I kinda ended up overleveling my team so the last gyms were easy, doesn't help that there is no auto level scaling. Also no new moves. But there is special split. Why? For me to see my Gyarados and have no option to use a physical move because there is none? TMs werent reusable but you could buy them in the store...

This was my team in the end. Most of the moveset was fucking awful. Last game I played was Black Pearl Emerald and I tried to have cover moves everywhere. Here? Most of them had return, their stab moves and brick break since I could buy it in the store.

It was easy peasy. But guess what happens after you finish it?

You get to be the defending champion, so their team gets stronger and the challenger is someone different. These are some of the challengers I found (alongside James and Oak)View attachment 6969347

Then I went to cerulean, got mewtwo with masterball then that is it.

Jesus I hate kanto so much, even the remake and an improved version can't save this shit region. I can play one billion hoenn games but I can't be bothered to play a kanto game.

I will only return to this shit region when the next game is a hack that changes everything (even the route I take, I end up getting the super rod before the good one so I go from magikarps to lots of options)

That litoral area with the bridges/bird guys is one of the most retarded map areas of all pokemon games

Whats your beef with Kanto?

I'm nearly set up with everything I need for a Fire Red Remixed playthru. I'm currently fucking about in Battle Factory back in Revelations to get the BP I need for a few tutor moves(thankfully the cost is quite reduced from what it was in original Emerald so I won't be there long), then breeding a couple of Pokemon in eggs so I can start with several Pokemon right off the bat that will actually obey me. I am taking a lesson from my latest playthru in Revelations in that I don't necessarily need a meta build, or even a STAB attack in those games. Single player campaigns are simple enough as they are and Red/Blue campaigns are probably the easiest of the bunch, I am under no delusion that this playthru will be hard so I am opting to make it as fun as possible instead. If you read my text doc, you will know that my Pinsir without a STAB attack was one of the best Pokemon I had last playthru, so I am experimenting with several Pokemon who have weird attacking types that aren't their STABs, just to see if that will impact the game any.

I've been thinking about the romhack that I am going to play itself. I was hoping for a more robust one, in fact I already have quite few picked out. Thing is that several caught my eye that would have no chance of working with Trigger's PC, ones that have new Pokemon/Fairy support/new regions, very ambitious romhacks. I plan to play these later on in full, even without Trigger's PC support, not like there is anything from official sources to look forward to. Romhacks that add future Switch game Pokemon or ones that recreate the Switch games full stop are among those I am eyeing in the future, and even as I made my last post several people already gave me a few new romhacks to look into as well. For now, there is one thing keeping me in Fire Red Remixed for the time being, and that is being able to capture potentially unlimited Legendary Pokemon. Remember, Trigger's PC is something of a Pokebank for Gen 3 games, being able to just have a whole PC box full of one kind of Legendary, that includes those which are competitively viable, and then be able to transfer them to any Gen 3-5 game(I doubt they are bankable) is a very interesting proposition to me. This will also be a first Kanto playthru where I am able to go full hog and have such a large collection of potential team members from all three regions up to that point, not just the standard Kantonian Pokemon. Already made sure to remember to transfer a whole lot of balls from my other saves so I can engage from ball autism and color match them with the right Pokemon the moment I deliver the parcel(which is apparently the first instance when I am able to transfer Pokemon between the app and the save).

Goddamn it, I'm still trying to complete BDSP's Pokédex!

Jokes aside, you can now get Shiny Meltan for completing the Kanto Pokédex (with Pokémon from LGPE) and Shiny Keldeo if you complete the Galar, Isle of Armor, and Crown Tundra Pokédexes (with Pokémon from SWSH). Shiny Keldeo makes sense considering there's a little sidequest involving the Swords of Justice in SWSH and Meltan makes sense due to LGPE's connections, it's just a shame that the latter can't evolve into Melmetal outside of GO.

@The handsome tard

It is just the most bland, boring and badly designed region of all. Even more when I am playing a remake (FRLG) that doesn't fix the problems with it.

I am currently playing Unbound and the difference is monumental and the thing is: it is just a modification of it, but the framework was already there even when comparing with RSE.

The pokemon distribution in Kanto is so bad it hurts, even more with my playstyle (get an early team and beat the game with an early rooster instead of changing as I go)

I tried to do the same in recharged yellow but couldn't, most early area are the same shitters every single time. The water pokemon is even worse since the old rod is only found way later in the game and the transition to good and super depends of the route you take (i always end up getting super before good).

The routes are incredibly bland it hurts and the problem isn't even that it was technology inferior since GSC routes are already superior.

And the Dex is incredibly bland too. I feel that this problem is the same as the GSC dex where most teams are starter + ampharos + bird since most pokemon early are quite bad and you can pick whatever you want.

Check out my team in unbound, all were acquired before level 15, look the variety (and there are even more that I played already with so I let them go like Gardevoir, abra, poochyena, lucario and gengar)

And the moto of my team building is always to use a pokemon that I never used before + starter

Should I do an Unbound playthrough?

I mean, this is the same generation that had psychic be weak to itself.

I get why, considering the Gengar line is tied to psychic, but it's only 1 ghost line out of how many other psychic lines?

Well, those are fair points. With that said, I supposed I tend to be more forgiving with the shortcomings of Kanto given how it was the original region and its not fair to expect that much from it. And I know you will say that GSC show that tech wasnt an excuse but it was, a least a bit since there wasnt much of a frame to base the "Pokemon" experience and Im very sure the devs were just throwing stuff at the wall and hoping it would work.

Gen 1 is unbalanced as shit, especially the original versions and its all held together by charm and duct tape but I guess I cant get mad even if I try, but thats just me. The franchise was learning how to walk before it could start running.

Well, there's no ghost line in the TCG. That's why. It's the same reasoning behind ice types being water in TCG.
O.K. but why are there only a small number of types to begin with? They eventually added other types later on like dragon and dark, so what's their excuse for other types like poison and ghost?

It can't be for balancing reason because that went out the window once EX cards came into the picture with their gigantic HP and huge attack power for little energy.

Probably just to make it easier to play. Having ghost + poison + psychic under one umbrella allows for different themed decks, and more flexible use of Pokemon. Sure, they're all under the "psychic" label, but the weaknesses can vary. The weaknesses are how you can even differentiate types.

Take the Blastoise and Gyarados example that set off this discussion.
Blastoise is weak to grass because it's pure water type in the game. So, why is Gyarados weak to lightning? Because it's a flying subtype in the game.

Nidorina is listed as a grass type, because idk it's a pure poison type, and you can tell it's a poison type because it's weak to psychic.

Gloom is also poison, but it's also a grass type, so it gets a fire weakness.

The card colors/types are just broad strokes. Any more colors, and it would be just ass to play, because it's easy to pick out a card at a glance for your deck. You don't have to pay attention to the little symbols, just the color. They already have problems with this now, because steel type is such a light color that it looks like colorless.

It's all about ease of access.

All these dex rewards are making me paranoid that they're going to axe HOME in like a year. I think they started pulling this shit with Bank a year or two before its death as well, just with Hidden Abilities instead of shiny forms, and given that gen 10 is a shoe-in for 2026 the timing lines up. I'm also surprised that these didn't already exist, but whatever. It's not like ILCA's known for competence.
