Tateona Williams is speaking out after two of her children likely froze to death while sleeping in a van at a Detroit parking garage.

According to the Detroit Police Department, the incident occurred on Monday, Feb. 10 on the ninth floor of the Hollywood Casino parking garage, where the family was seeking shelter inside the van. At the time, there were five children and two adults in the vehicle.

Williams, 29, told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that the deceased are her children Darnell Currie Jr., 9, and Amillah Currie, 2. The other adult in the van was Williams' mother, Yvette Goodman, 48. Four of the children were Williams' and the fifth was Goodman's. Williams spoke with PEOPLE alongside Detroit Board of Police Commissioner Tamara Liberty Smith, who is also the director of Detroit Power Detroit Community Outreach, a transitional housing service Williams was referred to on Monday evening.

“The mother realized that her 9-year-old son wasn’t breathing,” said interim Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison at a press conference on Tuesday, Feb. 11. “Previous to that, she had already called a friend, another close relative, to help because with the vehicle not running."

Bettison said the mother realized that the 9-year-old was not breathing. The friend, who had already arrived, took the boy in their car and headed to the hospital.

“While en route to the children’s hospital, as they checked on the other children that were in the van…they realized at some point that the 2-year-old wasn’t breathing,” added Bettison, who said that once the friend returned, the entire family got into the car and rushed off to the hospital.

According to Bettison, authorities were later notified by the hospital that the two children had died.

Williams told PEOPLE she woke up and saw "stuff coming out" of Darnell's mouth and rushed him to the hospital. "They really couldn't do much because I guess it was too late," she said, adding that she did not notice something was wrong with Amillah until her mother rushed into the hospital with the child.

“We do know that on that day and time the temperatures were below 32 degrees,” Bettison said. “Of course ultimately the medical examiner will determine the cause of death, but just on the surface right now it appears it was exposure to hypothermia.“

Bettison went on to note that the investigation is ongoing and that police have spoken with the children’s mother and grandchildren. He went on to note that the other three surviving children were with other relatives and nobody was currently being detained.

Authorities believe that the family had lived in the van for two to three months prior to the tragedy and chose the parking garage at the Hollywood Casino because it was free and provided safety and access to the casino’s restroom.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who was also at the Feb. 11 news conference, said that "the heartbreaking part of this is that there were family shelter beds available just a few miles away...[It] brings home the point that having services available doesn’t mean very much if the residents who need them don’t know how to access them.”

Based on preliminary information given to him, Duggan said the family had contacted the city’s homeless response team multiple times, most recently on Nov. 25, 2024.

On Nov. 25, Duggan said the family told the response team they had been living with another family and wouldn’t be able to continue to stay with them, so they needed to find a new place to go.

“In the course of that conversation there was no resolution reached on where they would go,” said Duggan. “And one of the things when you call our homeless services folks is that if it’s an emergency situation, we send out one of these outreach workers….For whatever reason, this wasn’t deemed an emergency that caused an outreach worker to visit the family.”

He added that, based on what authorities could determine at the time, “the family never called back again for service," nor did any member of the response team reach out to the family.

In her interview with PEOPLE, Williams said she "kept calling" homeless services after Nov. 25.

"I kept calling. I called out of state, cities, different states. I asked Detroit for help," Williams said. "And they still would say, when I called, they didn't have no beds. But it took two [of] my kids to die... for them to want to help."

When Williams called Detroit's Homeless Services on Nov. 25, they told her no family rooms were available, but they would let her know when one did. They never did, she told PEOPLE.

Smith explained to PEOPLE that Williams and her family had a "unique" situation because shelters would have to make "special accommodations" for the family. Smith said Williams and her family are staying at Detroit Power Detroit Community Outreach, an independently-owned shelter.

In his news conference, the mayor called on Deputy Mayor Melia Howard and Housing and Revitalization Department director Julie Schneider to furnish a review about this case within two weeks.

Foaming or frothing at the mouth doesn’t sound like hypothermia. With that many adults in the car it’s unlikely it was cold enough to kill. It’s possible it was poor ventilation, but you’d also want to rule out them ingesting something they shouldn’t have - the ‘something coming out of the mouth’ certainly suggests that.

Fentanyl exposure overdose? I bet if they did hair follicle drug tests on the mother and grandmother, they did all sorts of drugs.

They didn't try to get an ambulance to the van when they found two kids weren't breathing. They just drove the kids to the hospital themselves. Drugs in the van?

This makes me suspicious that it might not have been the cold what did the kids in. Useless parents.
Yeh, I'm not sure about in children, but I know that if an adult is suffering from hypothermia, their body will literally thrash around from trying to generate enough internal heat to keep itself warm. Same concept as shivering to keep warm - but to the extent where your body will go all out as if it's a case of life or death (because it is). If the parent was warm enough to not be experiencing hypothermic conditions, then either they didn't adequately dress the child, or they were otherwise extremely negligent.

Even if you WERE to believe her story, CPS will take your kids if you’re homeless and can’t keep them warm. They may be cramped in with other children in Detroit, but they won’t freeze to death.

But they didn’t freeze to death because you don’t foam from the mouth because of it. And if they did freeze to death, they wouldn’t have a problem calling the ambulance instead of driving themselves. And drugs may be a reason why the “mother” couldn’t find a shelter to stay in.

I call bullshit.

There were seven people sleeping in the van.

Never been a homeless but I have been camping and/or slept in my car on really cold nights and a layer of ice will form on the outside of the tent or car.

Go to sleep freezing your ass off, wake up snug as a bug in a rug, break through a layer of ice to get out, regret having gotten up because you're freezing your ass off again.

I think the heat from seven people would keep the van warm enough to not die.

Mom looks like a crackhead, I am calling this some form of poisoning.
This.

Read somewhere that a person gives off 175 watts of heat from just the head alone. That's why they say, 'when your feet are cold put on your hat'. It works. And any time you get so many people in such a relatively small space it can get uncomfortably warm. Have read many accounts of prisoners being packed into a cell and the place turns hot.

29 years old, FIVE kids, cannot support them...that's the real crime.

Pulmonary edema can occur in the terminal stage of a lot of things that kill you, it really isn't any kind of smoking gun by itself. And it absolutely can occur in the end stage of hypothermia.

Calling for EMS also means calling for the cops. Cops showing up to a hobo van where two children are dead means questions will be asked. They will start poking around inside the van to try to find the cause of those two children dying. Of course the two "adults" don't want that, because it would mean jail time for them.

My guess is there were narcotics in the van and the kids were exposed to them. Perhaps they found the drugs on the floor or in the console, thought it was candy, and ate it because they're starving and homeless. I'm sure the medical examiner will list what the actual cause of death is, unless they're a black activist type like the (third?) medical examiner for George Floyd was and lie about the cause of death to protect the adults. None of this adds up.

CPS isn't roaming the streets (and parking lots) looking for neglected children, they have to know where you are, and only immediate danger gets kids taken into care. No plans for shelter in subzero temperatures is probably immediate danger but if you have kids it also gets you a shelter placement. these people weren't on anybody's radar, that's why the kids are dead.

if your point is that she was deliberately avoiding services because she wanted to keep the kids but also wanted to keep using, yes I agree that's probable, and it's why there need to be residential drug rehabs for mothers and children. that's not bleeding heart of me, it's pragmatic - even drug addict mothers are safer for their kids than foster care, and if a mother wants to get clean, the terror of her kids going into care to be almost certainly abused is a major obstacle.

I know people are going to say fuck em all they shouldn't have done drugs in the first place but drug addiction is a massive public health crisis in the US, drug addicts have kids, they are going to grow up and I'd like to be old in a country with the fewest traumatized people as possible.

They said the temp was below 32. Current weather says it’s around 20 at night in Detroit. That is definitely in the “fucking sucks” territory and they’d die if they slept outside but that many people in the van really should have generated enough heat.
Could that many people have just breathed up all the oxygen and left the smaller kids to suffocate on CO2?

Other relatives? The father of one or more of the kids? Friends of either one of the moms or one of the kids? Fuckin' CPS?????
Unfortunately, CPS gets called on black families so often due to poor parenting, some states are trying to get the amount of calls reduced. Though, of course, they won't directly say that's the reason, they hide it behind stats like "only 17% of calls to CPS are found to be substantiated."

Poverty of this type is not sufficient for CPS. Mandatory reporters are expected to look into various NGOs instead.

Wouldn't think so. Very few cars, usually top-end vehicles, are that tight. Should have been enough air.

It's also telling that these two women didn't know a single person who would take them in, either individually or as a group.

The relative who drove them to the hospital, for example.

Pretty fuckin' based to make your relatives and their kids sleep in a casino parking structure when it's 20 degrees out. Unless, of course, your relatives were previously using your apartment as a whorehouse-cum-shooting-gallery.

I read a different article that said that the kids' mom had a lot of "dignity."

Funny way to spell "absolute indifference about the well-being of her kids."

The casino is 21+. I wonder if she was hooking there. Seems like one could find a slightly more appropriate place for a bunch of small children, unless there were certain business opportunities available.
The surviving kids are now staying with relatives. Seems likely that the relatives were always willing to take the children, but not the adults, and the adults were too selfish to do the right thing.

I was trying to find a timeline, another article has a bit more information from the mother on the timeline and some other random stuff.

The mother is a "certified nursing assistant," so she is slightly more educated than a PSW. She has been homeless for 3 months, says she was going to start a new job this week.

They parked in the lot at 1am. Ran out of gas sometime after.

They were parked on the 9th floor, and according to someone from the city the community outreach programs they have wouldn't not have looked in there.

The mother noticed the boy, who she calls Fatty, wasn't breathing at noon when she says she was trying to get him up to go to school.

She has, of course, set up a gofundme

A mother lost 2 children after asking for help and being turned away.

Now everyone will judge and say what they would have done, but let me start by asking y’all to respect my cousin and the fact that she just lost not ☝ but ✌ children

You cannot prepare for no shit like this ‍

So before you judge, pray for her and her strength. Then look in the mirror because she ain’t do nothing anyone else would not have done. She loved, protected, and did all she could to keep her babies safe…ON HER OWN!

Her only fault was her PRIDE and that’s gut-blowing because as a family if we knew we would have tried to help in some way Although everyone has it, you just have to learn to have it with the right people during the right situations.

My bby is broken right now all because she had too much pride to ask for help SHE LOVES HER BABIES and never expected this outcome Please show her some grace as God has you.

She thought she was protecting her babies by keeping them close to her. THIS WORLD IS CRUEL Not to mention they look for reasons to take our children, not help our mothers

So she did her best on her own 10 toes…

They stayed fed, bathed, and in school regardless of where they slept. They were happy children and they adored their Mommy, as she did them. She protected and cared for her babies the best way she knew how without asking a mf’er for nothing

She is a good person and a good mom, so pls stop tryna condemn my bby for being too prideful and take a look in the mirror!

Please pray, send positive vibes, love, and support for the mother, siblings, and extended family during this traumatic time❤️

Ultimately, this is an epidemic that continues to grow in our country daily. This did not have to happen, and there is no cure besides humanity!

Please help this mother rebuild her life, and receive the mental health and financial support that they attempted to get prior to this tragedy.

It's pretty contradictory. The cousin cannot decide if Tateona's only sin was being too prideful to ask for help or if she begged for help.

The obviously mean allow her to continue using crack/fent/whatever her niggo drug of choice is.
