This thread has officially gotten out of hand
Coming from someone who was robbed at gunpoint near campus two years ago, I can easily say that the area around it is disgustingly impoverished. Actually take a drive to spots like Southmore Blvd, go down Scott Street and Anita, or next to the Haven. You will see brand new houses pop up next to ones with boarded up windows. There are people out there with nothing to lose. Yes, we can statistically say that there is a predominant race in the 3rd ward. However, an overwhelming majority of that population simply wants to live their damn life. Many of them work here on campus. They walk here and back to their homes daily after their shifts. They'll work multiple jobs. They serve us our food, clean our toilets, and sometimes even walk around making sure campus, at least the parts they see, are secure. Some might be our professors, or staff in the offices processing our documents. We don't know who here on this campus that is making sure we can do what we do daily is a resident of the 3rd Ward. They'll be near campus at other businesses that we rely on. Look at the ages of the suspects, they're stupid ass kids. If they get caught they're not just going to jail, they're getting belt to ass from their parents. You guys are letting your racial judgements flow free because of kids with undeveloped brains.
Yet again, it can just be kids from areas far away from UH coming in to cause trouble. It's a running joke that there's kids from Alief (where I grew up) coming out just to be up to no good.
If you check the crime log, you'll see other cases pop up that aren't sent via UH Alert. Why? Probably because when it comes to things like fights, assault, SA, and other violent or identifiable crimes, there's a perp to be named and the PD is trying to handle it. We see these alerts because said crimes are committed by those that we cannot immediately name or identify. Race doesn't matter in this case. The last time UH sent out a security alert for SA was before the pandemic, and the unidentified perpetrator was a 5'11 white male. If you go to other counties with a different predominant race, you're going to see that race in their jails.
The best way to navigate this right now is to get the media fired up, the public involved, and your representatives on notice. Contact Mayor Whitmire. Go to the Board of Regents meeting next week and make public comment. It's at the Hilton on the 19th. Spread the word to the UH Parents Group. Everyone is pissed off. Get off of Reddit and do something about it.
Stop taking your anger out on a race. The school has failed at safety for years, and even when they claimed to 24/7 patrol a spot, someone was robbed right in front of it. And it's a shame that they haven't even addressed that yet.
