The troopers knew Blank. They had previously interviewed him in connection with the double homicide, Gibson later testified.

The troopers made their way to Blank’s room and banged on the door. Blank answered but refused to open it, Gibson said, prompting the troopers to return to their barracks to seek a search warrant for his hotel room.

When they returned with the warrant, no one responded to an order to open the door. So the troopers forced it open and found Blank and a second person in the bathroom, Gibson said in court.

BERKELEY, California––A national dragnet is out for Jack Amadeus “Ziz” LaSota, 34, also known as Andrea Phelps, and Michelle Jacqueline “Jamie” Zajko, 32, fugitive “persons of interest” in six murders and alleged leaders of a transexual vegan cult originating in Berkeley, California.
Members of the cult, called “Zizians” by some former associates, are implicated in two killings each in California, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.
The case has understandably touched off a media frenzy, not least because several “Zizians” claim veganism as a primary motive for a multi-year string of bizarre and violent behavior having nothing whatever to do with recognizable vegan or animal rights-motivated protest.

If “When man bites dog, that’s news,” as 19th century New York Sun editor John B. Bogart claimed, citing the rarity of the event, “vegan suspected of murder” is more newsworthy still.
Humans bite dogs many times per year, according to the ANIMALS 24-7 archives, typically trying to fend off pit bull attacks on their own pet dogs, or occasionally on themselves or other humans.
By comparison, ANIMALS 24-7 has record of only 34 homicides committed by nine alleged vegans since 1981. Over the same years, FBI crime statistics record 818,000 total homicides.
Of the nine alleged vegan killers, seven were parents who starved infants to death with inappropriate vegan diets. Four of them are now serving life in prison. One committed suicide.

One veg mass murderer & two veg serial killers in 45 years​

There was one vegan mass murderer: Adam Lanza, who on December 14, 2012 shot his mother, shot 20 children and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and then shot himself.
There were two alleged vegan serial killers, Michael Bear Carson, born James Clifford Carson, and his wife Suzan Barnes Carson, in prison since 1984, but unclear is whether either one was ever actually vegetarian, let alone vegan.
None of the alleged vegan killers, before the “Zizians,” claimed compassion for animals as a motive for murder.
The parents who starved their children to death, along with eight others who were apprehended in time for authorities to save their lives, were primarily religious extremists, in the names of several different cults and recognized religions, obsessed with maintaining personal purity.

“Witch hunters”​

Adam Lanza appeared to have been venting generalized rage against the world.
The Carsons claimed to have been “hunting witches.” As well as claiming to be vegetarians, they claimed to be Muslims.
Their known victims––they are believed to have killed as many as nine more––included 23-year-old aspiring actress Karen Barnes, bludgeoned with a frying pan and stabbed 13 times in 1981 after she allowed them to share her apartment in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco; 26-year-old dope grower Clark Stephens of Humboldt County, California, in 1982, whom they shot, burned, and buried in chicken manure; and 30-year-old Jon Hellyar, of San Diego, in 1983, after Hellyar picked them up hitchhiking in Bakersfield, California, while driving to Santa Rosa, California.

Two to tango​

San Francisco Chronicle Michael Barba, Matthias Gafni, and Megan Cassidy on February 6, 2025 traced the beginnings of the “Zizian” cult to the meeting of LaSota and fellow transsexual Gwen Danielson, then 23, at a “rationalist” event in October 2016.
They lived for a time on Danielson’s sailboat at the Berkeley Marina. Later LaSota bought his own sailboat. Still later, with partners recruited through “rationalist” online groups, they bought the 94-foot former U.S. Navy tugboat Panameta, built in 1945, renamed the Caleb and at the time anchored in Ketchikan, Alaska––LaSota’s home state.
LaSota, Danielson, and crew, what remained of it after several defections, sailed the Caleb to the Pillar Point yacht harbor in California in mid-2017. There it sank in March 2022.

Split with “Applied Rationality”​

Meanwhile LaSota, Danielson, et al met Curtis Lind, an older man who lived on a 117-foot yacht docked nearby.
In 2020 Lind sold the boat and moved to a property he owned in Vallejo, California, 63 miles north. The “Zizians” followed him, living in small box trucks.
“In the summer of 2018,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle investigative team, joined by a fourth reporter, Rachel Swan, “LaSota participated in an apprenticeship program run by the Machine Intelligence Research Institute and the Center for Applied Rationality,” founded by Berkeley-based artificial intelligence researcher Elizier Yudowsky, 45.
That association apparently ended when LaSota failed to convert Yudowsky and other participants in the program to veganism.

Disrupted retreat​

On the afternoon of November 15, 2019, LaSota and transgender associates Alexander “Somni” Leatham, Amir “Emma” Borhanian, and Gwen Danielson disrupted a Center for Applied Rationality retreat at Westminster Woods, a 200-acre conference facility alongside the Bohemian Highway north of Occidental, California.
Charged with conspiracy, obstructing a police officer, and wearing masks for an unlawful purpose, “the four defendants ran through numerous attorneys, pushed to have judges dismissed, requested a change of venue, and leveled accusations of transphobia,” summarized the San Francisco Chronicle team.
“The foursome had difficulty finding lawyers because they only wanted to hire vegans, said Dan Kapelovitz, a Los Angeles-based defense attorney who specializes in animal-rights cases,” the San Francisco Chronicle team mentioned.

Building the cult​

During the same time frame, “For years, LaSota, in rambling blog posts, set forth beliefs on topics such as machine learning, veganism, the importance of dual personalities, and the natural gifts of transgender women, luring a considerable number of followers — and critics — into the dark canyons of LaSota’s mind,” the San Francisco Chronicle team said.
On August 19, 2022 LaSota faked his own death by drowning. LaSota’s sister Naomi and the “Zizian” Borhanian claimed in affidavits to the San Mateo County Superior Court claimed to have been witnesses to LaSota falling from one of his boats and disappearing.
“While no body was found, and no death certificate issued, an obituary for Jack LaSota appeared in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and on Legacy.com,” the San Francisco Chronicle team learned.
The obituary mentioned that LaSota loved animals, one of the few published mentions of animals in connection with LaSota, despite LaSota’s vehement veganism.

Ambush of Lind brought death of Borhanian​

After a dispute with the “Zizians” over unpaid rent, Lind, then 80, began carrying a pistol.
In the early morning hours of November 15, 2022, Lind testified, he was ambushed by three “Zizians” who stabbed him multiple times, blinded his right eye, and ran him through with a samurai sword.
Lind, however, shot and killed Borhanian, critically wounding Leatham.
“Prosecutors later charged Leatham, 29, and another member of the group, Suri Dao,” then 21, “with murder,” the San Francisco Chronicle team reported, “under the theory that it was their actions — not Lind’s self-defense — that directly caused Borhanian’s death,” at age 31.
“It’s not clear exactly where LaSota was during the violence,” the San Francisco Chronicle team narrated. “But hours after the incident, Jerold Friedman, who had represented LaSota in a civil suit against Sonoma County over the Occidental protest response,” was informed by a Solano County prosecutor that LaSota had been “contacted by police in Vallejo,” who found him “alive and well.”

Zajko parents murdered​

A little over six weeks after that, on the last day of 2022, Richard Zajko, 72, and his wife, Rita, 69, the parents of Michelle “Jamie” Zajko, were shot dead in their Chester Heights home, west of Philadelphia.
Michelle “Jamie” Zajko, who turned 30 on New Year’s Day 2023, was found on January 13, 2023 at the Candlewood Suites hotel in Chester, Pennsylvania. LaSota and an individual identified as Daniel Blank, who lived with Michelle “Jamie” Zajko in Vermont, were found in another room.
Charged with misdemeanor obstruction and disorderly conduct, LaSota was released on bail in June 2023, “but stopped showing up for court, prompting a judge to issue an arrest warrant. To this day, her case is pending,” the San Francisco Chronicle team said.
The “Zizians” seem to have kept low profiles for the next year and a half, but on January 16, 2025, the San Francisco Chronicle team recounted, “a Solano County prosecutor pleaded with a judge to push the case Leatham and Suri Dao toward trial, explaining that the key eyewitness, Curtis Lind, was now 82 years old with a fading memory.”

Killed the witness​

Leatham and Dao were potentially facing the death penalty.
“The following day, witnesses told the Chronicle that a man wearing all black put his arm around Lind and repeatedly stabbed him in the chest. They said the assailant ran off, covered in blood, only to return and slit Lind’s throat,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported, not naming the sources apparently for their protection.
“Solano County prosecutors charged Maximilian Snyder, a 22-year-old affiliated with LaSota’s fringe group, with killing Lind in an attempt to silence a witness,” the San Francisco Chronicle added.
With that case under investigation in California, U.S. Border Patrol agent David Maland and a fellow agent whose name has not been disclosed on January 20, 2025 stopped a blue Prius on I-5 near Coventry, Vermont, about 14 miles from the Quebec border at Derby Line.
Both allegedly carried firearms bought by Michelle “Jamie” Zajko, identified by law enforcement agency bulletins as a “person of interest” in the murders of her parents.

Killed Border Patrol agent​

The Prius driver was Felix “Ophelia” Bauckholt, a German transexual. The passenger, Teresa Youngblut, a 21-year-old computer science student, pulled a handgun and fired at the Border Patrol agents, killing Maland.
Return fire killed Bauckholt, wounding Youngblut.
Youngblut was soon found to have attended the elite private Lakeside High School in Seattle with Maximilian Snyder, and to have recently applied for a Washington state license to marry Snyder.
Picked up Open Vallejo, on January 27, 2025, “Snyder studied computer science and philosophy at the University of Oxford, according to a LinkedIn profile matching his name. He was named a National Merit Scholar semifinalist in 2019, according to the Seattle Times. In 2023, Snyder won $11,000 in an Artificial Intelligence alignment awards research contest, according to a post on the Effective Altruism Forum.

“Talk to me about being vegan”​

“Youngblut studied computer science and computer software engineering at the University of Washington,” Open Vallejo continued.
“Youngblut, who was transported to a medical center in New Hampshire for treatment, has since been charged with two federal crimes: intentional use of a deadly weapon while forcibly assaulting or interfering with federal law enforcement, and use and discharge of a firearm during and in relation to an assault with a deadly weapon,” Open Vallejo added.
A friend of the couple, Jessica Taylor, told Open Vallejo that “veganism and animal rights are central” to the “Zizian” philosophy.
In addition, Open Vallejo reported, “A bio for an Instagram account that appears to belong to Youngblut reads, ‘talk to me about being vegan and ai alignment.’”

Snyder shared with the San Francisco Chronicle a 1,500-word statement including a passage describing animals as “my little brothers and sisters and siblings.
“They’re yours too,” Snyder wrote, “and they’ve been fighting all this time, over generation upon generation, death upon death upon death, so that one day, maybe, someone might grow up enough to save their children’s children’s children’s children.”

Though asserting “I am not one of Ziz’s friends,” saying neither LaSota “nor her friends endorse me or my words, so far as I know,” LaSota spent most of his statement “urging Eliezer S. Yudkowsky to embrace veganism,” the San Francisco Chronicle investigative team summarized.

This post is longer than necessary due to time constraints.
Over the past two years I’ve been writing comments on Ziz’s blog under various aliases, with the primary intent of figuring out if she was the kind of human she claimed to be, and a secondary intent of sabotaging what I believed was Emma’s hold over her. Some of these messages were designed to evoke strong emotional responses (rage, primarily) to assess her stability and alignment, since people act predictably when enraged. I adopted a variety of different personas (examples [1][2][3]), many of whom claimed to have beliefs I’ve never held or endorsed, for the sake of determining how Ziz would react to those characters. (For completionists sake, another set of posts was sent during what I think most would describe as a psychological break.) I used the kind of information I gathered to develop a profile on her. This approach was wrong of me, and I’m sorry. I usually don’t take these things to such extremes, and in retrospect the entire approach was very badbrains.

Through a different channel, Ziz and I began speaking using my rl identity, and eventually it became apparent to me that some of my pseudonymous messages had seriously freaked her out. I was perplexed and alarmed. If I’d known Ziz was going to freak out I wouldn’t have made them. I didn’t expect her to have taken any of the messages seriously. After that, I spent a few months debating with myself whether it was correct to tell her it had been me. On one hand, if you want to be genuine friends with someone, and I was starting to think that I did want that, then I’d need to fess up. Light cleanses all. On the other hand, what if she freaked out even more and wasted her time coming after me?

In February 2022, Zajko made a post where she talked about LaSota threatening to kill her unless she killed her tranny boyfriend Alice Monday with a gun silenced with a potato. She decided to to call his bluff by publicly posting his death threat.

On Jan 31st and again on Feb 2nd, Ziz and I had two multi-hour phone calls where she theorized about my motives, and where we repeatedly got off track arguing over whether Alice, a friend of mine, deserved to die or not. Ziz came to the conclusion that my motive for sending her those messages had something to do with Alice. She’s not entirely wrong. For a long while I’ve been angry with Ziz and her friends for insisting that Alice is entirely evil, and I still claim that Emma and somni have exaggerated Alice’s actions to gain brownie points with Ziz. (Ziz has got this whole Sith thing going on where she thinks Alice was her mentor, and guess what do Siths do to their mentors.) So my messages were influenced by my own anger. She’s also upset that I shared with Alice a little of what Ziz and I had discussed over the almost year long period where Ziz and I were communicating. I hold that there is nothing I said that Alice hadn’t already guessed from reading Ziz’s blog, given that our skills at perception are similar (though focused on different percepts), and that the leak of information by me in particular is insignificant. Ziz disagrees, and now sees Alice as a threat to her safety based on what Alice could say to people.

During our last phone call, Ziz informed me that the only way I could gain her trust and make up for what I did to her was to murder Alice, preferably sometime soon, (Ziz helpfully suggested I use a gun with a potato as a makeshift suppressor, and that I might destroy the body with lye), and then told me that after I should video call Ziz and show her the body before I destroy it so she could get proof positive that I’d really done it. And if I didn’t do it, Ziz planned to drive across the entire continental United States to murder me. I (stupidly) asked her if she meant murdering Alice metaphorically, cause I had a hard time believing what I was hearing, and she said that it’d be hard to provide proof of that.

Assuming this is serious and not some truly stellar revenge trolling, I find the idea that I should act out one of the subplots to ‘A Force Awakens’ at Ziz’s behest to be entirely unacceptable.

I suspect Ziz wants to feel more in control of the situation, most probably because she can’t trust me, and I engaged in a relationship with her where I had far more information about what was going on than she did. However, if there’s something I can do to make her less afraid, it’s not this. And while I don’t want her to remain in a state of fear or anticipation of what I or my friends will do, I refuse to die or murder anyone to make her feel better.

I’m not the kind of useless paranoid who jumps at bins like JD, or an unstable wreck who would drive themselves insane without anyone uttering a single word. So while I have the tenacity, skill, and willingness to evade Ziz and her friends indefinitely, it’s a waste of resources. We’re currently facing the collapse of civilization, a looming civil war, unfriendly AI, and a fuckton of other threats, and instead of focusing on those, we’re wasting resources respectively hunting and evading each other. The choice to focus on me, to imagine me as her “arch nemesis” or whatever, worth dropping everything for to murder, strikes me as a complete betrayal of everything Ziz cares about, tantamount to believing that the “right thing” to do is to attack the nearest wrong you see, when your best chance of winning is to attack wrongs upstream of that wrong. And while I no longer have any interest in working with her, we are still on the same side of the three part war. If Ziz wants to spite me, she can write a scathing callout post, refuse to speak to me ever again, or even set up a bot to spam my phone with poop emojis. It’d suck for me, but I’d deserve it. (The last suggestion is facetious.)

Though if I felt that Ziz could be appealed to with reason, I’d simply try reasoning with her. Ziz has indicated to me that anything less than murdering Alice will be seen as me attempting to pay less than Ziz believes the situation warrants. So instead, I’m writing this, so if Alice and I die or vanish, everyone knows who is responsible, and to let Ziz know that I have friends who will avenge me. Murdering Alice or me is now tantamount to committing suicide-by-proxy.

I don’t want Ziz to die, her friends to die, or for Alice and I to die. I’m aiming for the worlds where we all live. So I don’t want Ziz to kill me and thus kill herself.

I have no intent on interfering with Ziz’s work, except for the part where she’s decided to murder myself and Alice, because I don’t feel that murdering Alice or myself is justice. She is free to retreat behind “it was just revenge trolling.” Maybe I misheard her and she meant I should kill Alice in minecraft. So long as Alice and I are alive, that’s a possible explanation.

So to all who would read this: I am not suicidal. Alice and I would not and never will do some kind of murder-suicide pact. We’re not going to disappear. If you can’t video call us, then something’s wrong. This counts for today, tomorrow, six months from now, and three years from now. Ziz, like myself, does not forgive or forget, not even after years have passed. This post will be scheduled to re-post itself occasionally, just so no one forgets.

If you’ve read this and now somehow believe that my conflict with Ziz will serve as an excuse to betray her secrets, even for promises of safety, you are mistaken. Fear that I’ll post your attempts to extract information onto this blog to embarrass you and reveal you for the ghouls you are.

Zajko thinks that LaSota was threatening her and Monday because they knew too much, and claims that Leatham, Borhanian, and Pekarek were exaggerating Monday's abuse to curry favor with LaSota. But she mocks JD Pressman, who wrote the initial Zizians callout site, for being afraid of LaSota, and claims that "we are still on the same side of the three part war." This post was deleted later in the year, probably because she reconciled with LaSota.

Her mother was shot in the back of the head, and her father was shot with a bullet that went through his hand and into his temple. They were killed on New Year's Eve. On that night, a neighbor's security camera caught footage of a car driving up to the house, then someone screaming "Mom!" and "Oh my God!" inside. Someone entered the house, then two people went out and drove away in the car.

The caller had last seen the couple at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, wrote Vermont State Police Sgt. David Robillard in the affidavit supporting the search warrant.

Police soon learned that on that same day, Rita Zajko texted her daughter using the encrypted app Signal. The text was “about savings bonds for which it is believed the daughter was the intended recipient,” Robillard wrote. Michelle Zajko did not respond.

Investigators also discovered the Ring doorbell camera footage, captured by the neighbor across the street.
The video, starting at 11:29 p.m., showed that an unknown vehicle pulled into the Zajkos’ curved driveway, adjacent to the front door, and turned off its headlights. A minute later, the screams could be heard from the surveillance feed, the affidavit states.

Twenty-four seconds elapsed between the person yelling, “Mom!” and “Oh, my God! Oh, God, God!” Robillard wrote.

After the screams, Robillard said that “movement can be seen at the front door,” which appeared to open and then shut, “indicating the subjects entered the house.” An upstairs light inside the house turned on and, about nine minutes later, two subjects could be seen exiting the front door, he wrote. The pair entered the car and pulled out of the driveway.

Pennsylvania police found her address in Coventry, Vermont, where she lived with her roommate Daniel Blank (Interestingly, there is no official record of Daniel Blank living there. However, in 2021 Zajko and Alice Monday filed proof of residence at the address.) She claimed that she had an alibi, that she was with Blank during the time of the murder, and that she hadn't been in Pennsylvania in years. She also admitted to having a gun that shot 9mm ammunition.

On Jan. 5, 2023, Pennsylvania troopers conducted a “voluntary interview” with Michelle Zajko at the Coventry property, the court documents stated.

Zajko told police she had been at the Coventry house, with her roommate Daniel Blank, between Dec. 29, 2022, and Jan. 1, 2023, according to the filings.

She also said that she had not been in Pennsylvania since before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and that she had not spoken to her parents since about January 2022. Zajko acknowledged receiving a Dec. 31 text message from her mother “but only after direct” questioning, according to the filings.

During the Jan. 5 questioning in Vermont, Zajko also “confirmed,” the court documents stated, that she owned a firearm and allowed one of the troopers to handle it — a “Smith and Wesson” branded “M&P” model that fires 9mm ammunition.

Sales records revealed that Michelle Zajko purchased a Smith & Wesson model M&P handgun from Green Mountain Sporting Goods on Feb. 3, 2022, according to the filings. Purchase records showed she also bought 9mm ammunition “of the same manufacturer and type as that of the spent casings that were recovered adjacent” to her parents’ deceased bodies at their home in Pennsylvania, the filings stated.

Ballistic analysis revealed that the model of gun Zajko possessed “was capable of producing the striations present on the bullet recovered from one of the victims,” according to the court documents.

Court records show police searched Coventry property as part of probe in Pennsylvania double-homicide

When the police finally got a search warrant, they found 9mm bullets, but couldn't find the gun in her Vermont house. They searched the hotel where Zajko was staying while she was in Pennsylvania to arrange her parents' funeral, and also found Blank and LaSota in another room. Zajko, Blank and LaSota were arrested as persons of interest. The Coventry house was sold in July 2023.

On Jan. 12, 2023, a judge granted a search warrant for investigators to search Zajko’s home in Vermont. Detectives seized three 9mm cartridges, according to the records, but could not find the gun, which would have allowed for ballistic tests to see if it was the murder weapon.

That same day, Pennsylvania state troopers armed with another search warrant went looking for the gun in a hotel near the Philadelphia airport where Zajko was staying.

Police detained Zajko, records show, then learned that Blank, her Vermont roommate, was staying at the same hotel in another room. When police searched the room, they found both Blank and LaSota.

An interesting wrinkle to the whole case is that her parents were filthy rich. She also got a message about receiving a savings bond from her mother before her parents were murdered.

A rationalist told me that Jamie Zajko’s parents had at least several million dollars worth of assets and Jamie was their only child, so the police may see her as a suspect because of the financial incentive instead. Another person I spoke with said that they thought it was more likely that Ziz would have a financial motive in this than that Jamie would.

She also frequently talked about hating her parents for various reasons, such as not being vegan or making her dye her hair blonde, although she seems to still do that even though they're dead.

After Felix Bauckholt and Teresa Youngblut got in a fatal shootout with Border Patrol, it was found that Zajko was the one who purchased them. (Felix Bauckholt made a sudden trip back to America from Germany the same night her parents were murdered, for unknown reasons.)

She is now sought by federal authorities who believe she purchased weapons used in the January 20, 2025, shooting death of Border Patrol Agent David Maland.

According to court records, Zajko bought the guns from a Mount Tabor store in February 2024 before allegedly transferring them to Teresa Youngblut and Felix Bauckholt. Youngblut is in custody facing federal charges in Maland’s death, while Bauckholt was killed in the exchange of gunfire.

Bauckholt was making more money than most of her friends, but she didn’t live large. Bauckholt was highly calculating in other aspects of her life as well. She approached it like a math problem, deducing the precise number of hours of sleep she needed and what to avoid — soda, coffee — to be at her best.
Astra Kolomatskaia, Bauckholt’s former roommate, said Bauckholt’s day revolved around “super micromanaged decisions to make sure her state of mind was in the right place to perform as well as possible at work.”

In 2022, a tumblr user called silver-and-ivory (Archive) started to cut off her friends, including Bauckholt. He was worried, so he took the advice of his acquaintance Jessica Liu Taylor and offered a reward for information about her whereabouts. He never received any information, even though silver-and-ivory is probably cult member Suri Dao, who was living with LaSota in the squatter's camp. LaSota never told him, even after Bauckholt contacted him.

Jessica Taylor, an AI researcher who was involved in the Berkeley rationalist scene, met Bauckholt at an event in New York City in 2022. Bauckholt struck Taylor as bright but a bit weird and socially awkward, which wasn’t an unusual set of characteristics at rationalist events.
They hung out several times over the course of that year. At some point, their discussions became centered on Ziz. Taylor said it was clear that Bauckholt was enthralled with certain Zizian tenets, such as the importance of altruism and ethical veganism.
And Bauckholt seemed to not be bothered by some of the more extreme positions Ziz took, like the “importance of retribution under some circumstances,” Taylor said.
“It seemed like she considered the group more legit than other people did,” Taylor said.
Taylor said she warned Bauckholt to steer clear of Ziz and the Zizians, whom she considered to be part of a “death cult.”
That was sometime in late 2022. Taylor now knows that Bauckholt failed to heed her advice.

Suddenly flew back to the US in December 2022 a few hours before the Zajko murders. Around November 2024, Teresa Youngblut moved to the same street Bauckholt was living on in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

On January 14, 2025, he checked into a hotel in Lyndonville, Vermont with Youngblut. Suspicious hotel staff called authorities after noticing their guests had a suspicious amount of guns and tactical gear. When questioned by police, they claimed to be in town to look at some property. Michelle Zajko owned an undeveloped lot nearby.

Law enforcement officials began paying attention to Youngblut and Bauckholt on Jan. 14, after they were alerted to the pair’s suspicious behavior by a hotel employee in Lyndonville, Vt. That person had told police the pair “appeared to be dressed in all-black tactical style clothing with protective equipment, with the woman, later identified as Youngblut, carrying an apparent firearm in an exposed-carry holster,” according to an FBI agent’s affidavit filed in Youngblut’s criminal case.

Around 11 p.m. on Jan. 14, Youngblut and Bauckholt checked in to the Newport City Inn and Suites in Newport, Vt., about 30 minutes north of Lyndonville and only a few miles from the U.S-Canadian border. Samantha Camley, manager of the inn, said Youngblut initially reserved one room for one night.

But the next day, around 10:30 a.m., Youngblut returned to the office to extend their stay. They stayed in room 50 of the inn for six nights, checking out on Jan. 20.

Youngblut and Bauckholt wore N-95 masks whenever they were in public in Vermont, and even while outdoors. Youngblut alluded to worries about the COVID-19 virus when asked about their mask-wearing by a staff member at the inn. Bauckholt consistently also donned a hat or hood. They left their room tidy and did not accept cleaning service during their stay, employees said.

Woman sought in parents’ murder tied to border agent’s shooting death

On January 20th, they were pulled over by Border Patrol agents. Youngblut panicked and shot at them, causing them to shoot back. Bauckholt and agent David “Chris” Maland were killed during the gunfight, and Youngblut was wounded.

Bauckholt’s involvement in the gunfight – which occurred after Border Patrol stopped the southbound blue Prius with North Carolina plates – is not clear, at least to local authorities speaking to VDC. “I don’t understand why he got involved in a gun fight,” the law enforcement official said. “I understand he did not start shooting but rather someone inside the vehicle did so. The dead person was not the shooter — at least at first.”
Given that HSI had been interested in him for days prior, it’s unlikely that the traffic stop was a random event. Also, VDC’s law enforcement source said the blue Prius with North Carolina plates was observed pulled over 30-45 minutes before the 3:15 PM shooting. The driver was seen talking outside of the car with a Border Patrol agent. If so, the shooting did not occur immediately after the car was pulled over. Something – the source doesn’t know what – clearly triggered the shooting a half an hour or more after the stop.

First: I am not one of Ziz’s friends, and neither she nor her friends endorse me or my words so far as I know. I speak only for myself, as myself, for the sake of everyone. This I swear on my Laws.

With that out of the way:

Eliezer, you need to have a crisis of faith about whether animals are people. It is critical to saving the world.

I am one of your students, and I am desperately trying to reach out to you, not to ask for your help, but because it’s the best gamble I can think of to increase the chance that this world survives, with what little power I have left. So please read this all the way through. It is your duty as a rationalist, and the least you can do for me.

I will not be going very deeply into the object level argument, because they are not the problem. The object-level issue is very simple. I know you have a model where a certain level and kind of reflexivity is necessary to be a person. I think a bright five-year-old would be able to tell you that even if that model seems plausible, it is a terrible reason to kill and eat aliens who scream when you beat their babies to death against the floor. A bright five-year-old would be confused about how you could possibly be so confident in such a frankly wishy-washy model, as to kill and eat these aliens who scream and struggle when you try to kill them.

So I don’t think object-level arguments will help.

The problem is you, and your own failure as a rationalist, which is why, instead, I am trying to get you to apply your own damn Art. I’m trying to get you to take the problem seriously. To actually think about it, and to make a sincere effort to really, really imagine the world where you’re wrong.

First, animals being people has obvious, pervasive implications about the world, the current strategic situation, and humanity. Second, you’re stuck. Your Art has stagnated. You are going in circles. Maybe you’re inching forward, it’s hard to tell, but if you are, it’s not enough. What happened to your tsuyoku naritai? What happened to shutting up and doing the impossible? Now you’re “dying with dignity” instead. What would the Eliezer who had just wrote about shutting up and doing the impossible, think of “Death with Dignity”? Do you think he’d be impressed? You can do so much better than this. Your art has so much further to go. And this is what’s holding you back.

Third, Those are my little brothers and sisters and siblings. They’re yours too, and they’ve been fighting all this time, over generation upon generation, death upon death upon death, so that one day, maybe, someone might grow up enough to save their children’s children’s children’s children. And now we humanity are here. And you are killing them. Stop.

You need to stop treating this as an exercise. You need to stop being satisfied with an answer that seems plausible without engaging your full emotional cognition. Without grasping the stakes.

You have a lot of experience with what that looks like from the outside, don’t you? It’s how everyone else has been treating the impending end of the world and the consequent deaths of everyone they love.

You have been screaming, and they have been choosing not to listen. Choosing to treat it as a mere topic of debate, for a career, for a “life path”.

Well now I am screaming about this. I am trying very, very hard to do it in a way that you won’t immediately dismiss.

How confident are you in your model, exactly?

Imagine if a traveler from true Civilization came to you and then, “no, animals are definitely people. We’ve been working on saving them and uplifting them and so on, so that we can finally talk to all of our little brothers and sisters and siblings and play together in the sunlight without fear.” How surprised would you be? What would that update feel like?

Have you ever imagined something like this before?

I would be surprised if you had, especially if you had in detail, as more than an image quickly dismissed. You have taken far, far too long to aim the full force of your Art at this facet of reality. There is not time for you to dilly dally any longer.

I was not quick to go vegan. It wasn’t hard for me to realize that even a small chance that I might be wrong about eating animals was important. But then I fought a rear guard retreat against the truth. I told myself that the marginal effects on the quality and convenience of my nutrition were more important than the lives I was eating because I was fighting to save the world against the explicit advice of others who used to think that too. It felt wrong, and over the course of a few weeks I stopped eating chicken, then flesh, then animal products in general. Even then, I didn’t grasp the gravity of the decision until later.

You, Mister Rationalist, should be able to do much better than that. You should be skilled enough to have a crisis of faith, see which ways the winds of truth are blowing, say “oops”, and change your mind.

I think you know how to have a crisis of faith, but I’ll give you some advice anyway.

You need to allocate at least 24 hours, alone, free of distraction. For something this important, 30 days or more would be better. You should not wait to stop eating flesh and animal products until afterward. You should stop NOW if you haven’t already. (You should have already). Eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or Clif bars or something.

You should watch Dominion, and imagine, really, imagine, that those are alien children. Alien mothers watching their babies being taken away from them. So that you can actually evaluate, having lived in that world, whether it’s really so implausible.

The rest is up to you.

You will not regret spending at least 24 hours on this.

I am not in a position to make bets easily, but I am more than willing to bet what I can. There are around $6,000 left in my checking account. I don’t know yet how and when I would be able to get it to you, but I am willing to bet it without hesitation.

In about two years and three months, I am supposed to receive a portion of a trust, which should amount to about $200,000 minus half of my legal fees from up until then. I am willing to bet whatever is left of it also. And I am not attached to the legal fees either, compared to this.

All this I am willing to bet against only the expected good that would come of you having the crisis of faith, on the claim that you will not regret spending at least 24 hours on it. I wish I could bet more simply and credibly, but alas.

I don’t expect you to take me up on this bet for various reasons, but on my pride as a rationalist, I am so willing. Do not selfishly dismiss the spirit of my offer.

You, of all people, should be able to tell how hard I have been trying, in good faith, to get through to you. If even this is not enough, if even this is something you choose to ignore—

You will not merely have failed your Art. You will have insulted it. Desecrated it. Held up a sham in its place.

“The mind of a human or pony is complex and different parts can hold contradictory values. You didn’t value being miserable, but the social part of you held on tight to your identity as a human that didn’t like ponies. I could only satisfy more common values for you.”

This case has brought the absurdities of the effective altruist/rationalism into the mainstream eye, and now would be a great time to dig up some information on rationalist lolcows. Alice Monday has done lots of abusive stuff, has deliberately tried to do “legibly abusive stuff” like hitting people to fuck with moral norms. I’m just going to list a small sample of the horrible stuff they’ve done for now, instead of going down the rabbit hole of their justifications.

Examples​

• The most common incidents of abuse were what alice called “fights”, where we’d be having a conversation about some random topic usually about rationality, Alice would get upset at my communication style, say something like I was acting high status on purpose to make Alice feel dumb, would get mad when I said I wasn’t doing it on purpose, would refuse to discuss the original incident saying that what I did was minor and they were mad that I was “gaslighting” them into “thinking I was innocent/good”, that they were mad at the way I responded to their accusation, were mad that I “started a fight”, until after hours of Alice yelling at me I couldn’t even remember how the “fight” started and Alice would just refer to each incident as me “starting a fight” from then on.
  • Alice said multiple times that they would hit Jamie unless either me or Jaime stopped these “fights” between Alice & me happening.
  • Later Alice started throwing things at me and hitting me with a detached broomstick during these “fights”.
• Alice said that if I wanted to make Alice hitting me fair, I should just hit Alice back too, but not in self defense, only if I got mad at them when Alice wasn’t already attacking me. I didn’t.
  • I believe Alice was attempting to invert morality so the most moral people are the people willing to look the most culpable.
• I had a high fever and was lying in bed. Alice took my phone and read a server they had been banned from, specifically to search for messages with the name “alice”. Saw a mutual friend F say that spending too much time with Alice was bad for them. Yelled at me that I was nicer to F than to Alice, that I was letting F manipulate me and that’s why I was nice to F. Sat on top of me, pinned my arms down, and started hitting me despite my repeated begging to stop I had a fever. The moment I moved my arms to defend myself or struggled to get out of being pinned, Alice screamed and cried as if I had just slapped them, to the extent I emotionally felt I had just attacked them instead of flinched and tried to defend myself.
  • This is a anvil-droppingly legible example of a trend of Alice blaming people for being scared of Alice. If I flinched when Alice came into a room they’d say I was hurting them. If I used polite/defensive language Alice would say I was calling them “bad”.
  • This is a one of the worst individual things Alice has done to me. I believe they arranged that on purpose to fuck with me, like “here see? I am that bad and you’re not going to do anything about it” and like “see? you’re just going to tell people the worst thing I’ve done instead of getting into the subtlety of the situation”. Yes Alice actually does this level of fuckery.

Interesting lore if true, but take it with a grain of salt, obviously; these guys are perhaps “unreliable narrators”.
