Relax. They're probably just gonna keep him for awhile, and then escort him to the airport and permaban his ass from the county.
They want to make a point, but they're probably not chomping at the bit to have long-term custody of him.
The few Americans that are in Japanese prison are there for way more serious shit, and, even then, there's a procedure the State Department can use to request a U.S. citizen to serve their sentence in a U.S. prison.
Which is not to say American prisons are great for people with mental illness. They're absolute hell. For all I know, the Japanese prisons might have better healthcare even as they are more rigorous. They certainly seem to be cleaner and safer from what I've seen.

I think they will. They'll realize Joshua is an unstable retard and send him back to the U.S. since it wouldn't be worth the cost to keep him in Japan. He's also not trying to become a resident of Japan, so there's no reason to keep him around. Send his tourist ass away and let someone else deal with him.

Which is 100% fine by me. The long-drop method they employ, when done right, is a time-honored method of killing the shit out of somebody quickly.
More importantly, they actually rarely use it. It's reserved for the most vile of crimes. Like the Tokyo subway Sarin gas attack. In 2023, 24 people were executed in the U.S, compared to zero for Japan.
If they were using it against political or religious dissidents, like countries like North Korea and Iran do, I would take issue, but some people are just evil and worthy of being removed from this mortal coil.

They have a really "fun" way of doing it, too. While much like the U.S., they have an excruciatingly lengthy appeal process, once you get to the end of it, you don't get to know when it's coming. It could be any day. One day they just wake you up and kill you.

I've got this friend named... Joey Jo-jo Junior Shabadoo with firsthand experience and according to him, jail (留置場 as opposed to 刑務所, prison) is actually not bad at all.
He got three decent meals a day, one of which was usually just a jam sandwich, but the other two were passable bento.
The guards and other inmates were pretty friendly. The harshest treatment he received was the confiscation of a makeshift deck of cards, which he learned was against the rules.
On the other hand, there's apparently some truth about the use of sleep deprivation to force confessions.

There's a difference between jail when you've admitted your offense and when they're getting you to admit to it.
We have multiple videos of cops hauling this idiot off. We don't know whether they've just decided to let it slide or not. They may have already realized he's a retard.
Not sure whether more recent videos are him are from before or after the arrests we have video of.
If he is being allowed to wander around he'll do something else to get arrested for. I wonder why he thinks Italy is his home country.

Nothing will happen to him. Anyone who thinks he’s gonna do any time in Japan needs to lay off the crack. Tourists are always treated with extra care and get a slap on the wrist even for more serious stuff. The international drama is just too much hassle, and arresting a literal retard is not a good look.
