I always assumed it was a holdover from Egyptian times. The Pharaonic inheritance was matrilineal too, because it was the only way to be 100% certain the divine bloodline remained pure and unbroken. So the oldest son of the Pharaohs oldest daughter was the heir presumptive. It led to alot of Pharaohs marrying their sisters.
