I've sperged on this a lot in the Pooner Zoo and Antifujo threads, but the problem of girls latching onto gay ships goes much deeper than you might think. Female heterosexuality is still the more repressed of the two, and the sight of a woman next to a man makes many young girls uncomfortable due to living in a world of modern sexism. Japan is very dismissive and objectifying towards its female residents, so it's no wonder why it boomed especially big there.
This video lists the main reasons for fujoshi's obsession with BL, and they all relate to the idea that the female body is problematic compared to a male one. Even in fantasy land, the fear of pregnancy lingers in their minds, for example. So they distance men from women as much as possible in their romances, and as a result end up relating and "identifying" with gay couples only. That's how the fujo-to-pooner/"lesbian" pipeline works.
