Looks to me like Trudeau is seeing this as his chance to maybe not get completely wiped out in the upcoming election.
It sounds like he's unleashed the Liberal shills and drones to try to drum up support via the sense of Canadian nationality so maybe his party can hang onto a few seats and he won't go down in history as the PM that destroyed his party.
