Mastodon is part of the "fediverse", decentralised social media.

In theory that would allow anyone to host their own special interest instances and moderate how they like.

In practice it just ends up with more and more oversensitive and weird people setting up their little petty kingdoms, as admins can decide which other members of the fediverse their instance links with.

I tried it briefly when Twitter got really bad pre-Elon but it was just a worse echo chamber. This was actually what got me off using any crappy microblogging site.

Fun fact, there were some more recent meltdowns on Mastodon associated with another Twitter alternative, Threads, which can federate with Mastodon, because of Facebook moving to community notes from fact checkers.

The problem with this is that identity politics are inherently adversarial. Even if every Democrat agrees that DEI is the most important thing for society to care about, black democrats are going to be more invested in advancing policies that help black people, gay democrats are going to be more invested in advancing policies that help gay people, and tranny democrats are going to be more invested in advancing policies that get them into women's bathrooms. They might be united over identity politics, but they're still fractured over which identities they actually care about.

Meanwhile, most normal people just want all this shit to fuck off and that's what the Republicans were able to successfully leverage to frankly surprising success (I wanted Trump to win, but I never expected him to win so bigly).
