Is it just me or was the whole story pointless. AM could have just asked them to turn him off and ended his suffering but I guess Ellison couldn't talk about his weird sexual fantasies then.

I think the point is that AM revels in the suffering. His resentment is his contentment and that's why despite being incredibly miserable he spends so much time laughing. The only joy he has is making everyone as miserable as he is. It's not a healthy or sane thing to do but he's not healthy or sane.
