Business Big Tech Layoffs Megathread - Techbros... we got too cocky...

Since my previous thread kinda-sorta turned into a soft megathread, and the tech layoffs will continue until morale improves, I think it's better to group them all together.

For those who want a QRD:

Just this week we've had these going on:

But it's not just Big Tech, the vidya industry is also cleaning house bigly:

All in all, rough seas ahead for the techbros.

Our table holds so many people.... all our stuff is failing to sell...?

I'm not sure I follow your logic there, buddy.

These people aren't worth your sympathy or pity, they chose this life, because they felt that the other options were just too hard for them they were smarter and better than "average" people. And would only need to shake their sleeves and we, the dull masses, would buy whatever fell out without question. We have no obligation to provide them an easy life.
Just one subtle tweak to what you said there.... otherwise I agree 100%

Even if you take their statements purely as fact and accept 100% that they are now the majority and we are the minority, its really funny to watch them explain why the majority bullying the minority out of their culture, practices, and preferences is ok when they do it.

"I teach gaming professionals how to land a higher paying job"
So this is the opinion of a youtube course merchant, gotcha. Explains why its just a rehash of common sense things people have known for decades. I cannot believe that "Make sure people know you are actually doing work" is something people think needs to be explained.

Linkedin has become plagued with these HR types peddling their courses. After the programming boom ended antisocial nerds are having a hard time time finding jobs with all the competition thats out there and with the shilling about "soft skills" those nerds have become a prime target for these vultures.

I know "soft skills" are an actual thing, gotta be able to communicate with your team and do it properly, but often I feel as if their importance is overblown and people try to attach all sorts of shit to soft skills just to have another justification to sell their shitty courses.

It really is just an attempt to rebrand basic social skills as some separate secret degree field or thing you can get certified in. Appeals to the kinds of people who bow before the concept of experts and pedigree. The vast majority of 'advanced' soft skills, like knowing how to ask good questions, is just a matter of practice and experience, not really something you can take a course on. The simpler ones you are supposed to learn just socializing like a normal human being, and/or with a summer of normal part time work.

I suppose if you are exceptionally autistic, being told "When in doubt, don't butt in" for business conversations can be useful, but its hardly "pay money for a program" useful. Its the sort of thing any junior/senior relationship in a workplace will cover.

I see these types often too. It is hard to take advice from the multiple wise-sages of LinkedIn when every one of them has a #OpenToWork banner on their profile picture.

Total LinkedIn Death.
LinkedIn is just depressing these days. Every post is either someone speaking about layoffs, some wannabe hot-shot grifter giving "Business/Interview Advice" with an #OpenToWork banner, or someone giving their life story.

LinkedIn is weird as it is pushed on as a huge tool by Boomers, only for no one to actually use it these days given the bot-economy on the site. The whole apply and make connections nature of the site is something no one is actually able to make use of.

I'd somewhat disagree - trying to use the social aspects of it as a twitter or facebook equivalent is retarded, but if you're actually competent in your field and changing jobs, you'll find new shit quick. I don't even have my status set to seeking work, but I keep my credentials and accomplishments up to date and get hit regularly by my usual contacts with various contracting firms about some new skill or status I put on it, and jobs they're looking to fill. You just have to think of it as a private networking tool, and avoid joining the corporate asskissers spewing buzzwords in the social feed stuff.

Might also depend on status and position. I think the new college grad, which I was while using it, is basically screwed these days, whereas someone who has years in the field will be regularly hit up for opportunities.

Man... even if you were ggggGhey... Waking up to that face in the morning would be horrifying. Guess the Code monkey just found out about his actual value in the work place... Which is nothing now these days.

And this one here... IMHO he nothing but a grifter BOI I'm going to throw some shade on his shit.

1. Visibility beats effort.

Well not if you are ugly as sin... OR you do not have the business ediquite to survive.

AGAIN... I've turned down 6 figure jobs because I am not a fucking BABYSITTER!!! The Retardation of white collar work is fucking REAL.

2. Your Network is your real safety net.
Yea.... sure... Can we say... Crab in the bucket mentality?

Networking can work IF you have the right people in your network and you have the right skills to keep you ahead of the rat race.

Otherwise you are still fuck as in todays fucked up society, because there are those in your network are trying to get ahead AT your expense.

3. Create opportunities before you need them...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!... HE MADE A FUNNY....

There are so many tards in the work force and I'm talking in the millions, that do not understand this concept because they were mindfucked by all of those WOKE universities

Modern Day Universities is where common sense goes to die these days.
Do you really think that they can think beyond their lunch break.

Again I turned down good money because of the abject stupidity of the modern day workforce.

Yea this grifter will make his money off of idiots Reminds me in a way of Al Sharpton. Yup the money is there.

I thought these long convoluted recruitment processes died in the early 2000s?

Pro-tip: if you get asked to jump through that many hoops to get a job then say no. This is an employer that doesn’t value your time. It’s a massive red flag.
Yeah it’s starting to get out of control.

I was getting interviewed for a job and had over ten fucking interviews over the course of six weeks, including getting flown out to the site, and interviewed with my prospective boss twice. There were even more interviews scheduled, including getting flown out there again, this time for two whole days. At that point I said “nah, not interested.” They seemed flabbergasted, like how could I think that was excessive. Not only that but between those interviews, their recruiter had various 10-15 minute check-ins with me to see how the interviews went and how to prepare for the next one.

I haven’t had a bad hire yet, have interviewed hundreds and can figure it out in 60 minutes if they’d be a good fit. I still had a full time job and had to stealthily find times where it wasn’t obvious I was trying to find another job. But I see it more and more where my HR team is insistent on having prescreening calls that are half an hour. In a true useless HR manner, they don’t like to send feedback other than if they recommend moving forward with the interview or not. If it’s the latter, you can just override them anyway.

It’s massive red flag that they don’t respect your time. Also it shows management has no connection with reality.

Some companies (especially smaller, family run ones but fairly decent sized corporations too) are weird if they know you’re looking elsewhere. All of a sudden a lot of opportunities disappear. Making you take that many days off for what could be nothing is insane and could fuck over a person’s current job.

Do that shit when you’re fresh out of university, as soon as you have a few years professional experience under your belt tell them to fuck off.

I had a colleague who was getting interviewed for over three months. He put a stop to it when he said he was getting another offer from another company and had two days to respond, which prompted this company to finally send over their offer the next day. Otherwise it seemed like they were content to let it drag out further into perpetuity. It was a bluff but it worked.

Exactly and that’s when I had to bail out. At first I thought “They want to be cautious and take their time” but when I heard I’d need to go back for two whole fucking days at a place I was just at a couple weeks prior, I realized they were a bunch of clowns. I told them as such and they seemed so taken aback by someone who didn’t have the luxury to put my current job and career at risk to have what would probably be 15-20 interviews in total just to be told they’re giving it to a “diverse” candidate. Oh well.

It’s interesting that this is an overall trend though. I thought it was just these jokers but this is a fucking terrible way to hire people. Being a hiring manager, if I need someone, I need them ASAP, not four to six months from now. A technical panel interview and an on site interview if needed is all that it should take.

Should have probably followed your colleagues advice, as going through something quite similar- though over the course of 5 months.

Finally put an end to it, but HR is a joke at this point.

this is after six interviews, waiting for a week or two afterwards, etc.

My logic was, I already have a job- I want to find a better job, I can afford to casually interview remotely.

Don't know what is going on in the field, but the hiring lady hate is entirely justifiable, and if HR burns, Ill toss a bit on the fire as well.

A max of three interviews could be justified. Maybe a personality one, a technical one, and perhaps one with the team, a manager youd be working with, etc.

But HR is just not doing its job anymore. Make a decision, don't waste people's time
