I can still remember the feeling of being on the first date with a woman I almost married. I was making a point to be bluntly transparent about my beliefs, talking about stuff like how I don't date blacks because they have statistically higher rates of STDs, or the threat of armed revolution being necessary to keep a government from oppressing its people, shit that would normally make people uncomfortable to say the least but which I feel strongly about, trying to cut to the chase and figure out where we deviate and whether we were right for each other, and feeling so refreshed and hopeful because she was onboard with everything I said. I felt like I finally found one who gets it.

Years later after we realized we wanted different things in life, I reminisced about that conversation on our first date and she told me she doesn't remember a single thing we talked about that day, she just thought I was charming. And I guess that was enough for her to abandon her convictions and adopt mine, at least nominally.

Like, I don't even know what lesson I'm supposed to take away from that. In my mind the entire point of a first date is to figure out if you share the same goals and desires in life, but if they're just going to blindly agree with you then what's even the point? Do you have to constantly remind them what you believe so they know what to believe, like they're a child with no inherent agency? Or do you have to wait until they get over their initial infatuation with you before you can even try to determine whether your morals align? Those both sound wrong to me but what other option is there? Look for a woman who already belongs to a group that reflects your beliefs, and hope she's sincere about it and not just conforming to the social pressures around her? It's just demoralizing.
