Eliezer Schlomo Yudkowsky / LessWrong

Worse thing, it's not a recent thing. Recall the number of scandals associated with stuff like cloning, or cold fusion. Research that was sold in its infancy as for the direct betterment of mankind, but soon after ethical violations and breach of the scientific method either vilified them to the eyes of the public or complete jokes to most academics (back when people were relatively sane). In modern day clown world, people get carried very easily by hype men like Musk, Altman and co., and never question how their developments are made, at what human cost or the moral issues that the new advances represent.
Or they just lie about everything for money:

1740134943358.png

And yeah, that is also a human cost/moral issue. Vast amounts of money get sucked up into this kind of shit that end up lining the pockets of thieves and insider traders at the expense of other companies/causes that actually do shit.

I lose my shit when other people lose their shit about Roko's Basilisk. People has been talking about this for centuries, you're just an idiot who thinks AI will become god. (people like this also insult religions and god :p)

Everyone and everything is failing you by constantly failing to confirm to the perfect vision no matter how many times you tell it to achieve it. It's like reality is not even listening to you even as you've rationally demonstrated how it should conform based on a bunch of shit you've made up. Just fucking science it already.
Suddenly you help me realize how much in common Yud has with moviebob...

Media reporting on these issues certainly doesn't help. With the cloning and gene editing example you have articles on how scientists are bringing extinct animals back from the dead. If you read into what's actually happening you realize what they're doing is modifying extant animals to superficially resemble an extinct species. It's not the real deal, it doesn't act like it or share its genetics, but the average Joe doesn't dig deeper so he assumes it's the real deal.

Then there's the matter of what we'll actually do with these Frankenstein's monsters once we have them, as they're not truly the animal they resemble and thus don't have the same role in the ecosystem, but that's a little more offtopic.

It's thanks to retards like this that Ph.D candidates have to take mandatory Ethics courses. How do they not stop for one second to consider the morality of their actions whenever they want to play God?
One of those ethicists would be Peter Singer, who routinely stakes out positions as edgelordy as the rats.

I think think it's amusing the Ziz cultists have shown these rat ideas, far from being rational, in fact have objectively terrible results and following them to their logical conclusion gives you an apocalyptic murder cult.

Or maybe REAL rationalism has simply never been tried.

You also have Eli Tyre, a rationalist and former CFAR instructor doing his best to janny in the comments, denying CFAR convincing gullible autists that AI will destroy the world and then encouraging them to take drugs had anything to do with the Zizians:
Wow, a big-brained college dropout. At least he made it further than Yud, who failed high school.

Fortunately for us, his attempts to gain psychic powers were also a failure.

actually chud, the "eu" means good

So he was active in rationality groups in college while at the same time he believed he had psychic powers? That gets the noggin joggin…

It makes me wonder if any of these rationalist vegans have actually looked into or been around livestock. Im not talking about watching those documentaries about factory farms where they show the worst stuff possible. But like seeing a family or friend who keeps a few chickens or goats and thinking, wow these babies are being tortured with their fresh food and ample space, eating eggs and milk they produce is evil!!! Further if you slaughter chickens humanely (the only ones i have had direct observation of ) they dont struggle or scream as these guys seem to think. Are they also against the euthanasia or culling of animals? Are they against the clearing of habitats to increase production of soybeans? Are they against the use of pesticides in that production? They make sure farmers dont set mouse traps pitside their barns do they? I seriously dont understand how being vegan for purely ethical reasons can be a logical position to hold. I think it just gives them a sense of moral superiority and that’s why they espouse it.
I also question if they've been around chickens specifically, on some days of dealing with them I felt like those dumb cluck fucks deserved to suffer. They shit in their water bowl, they peck, they are viciously stupid, they look at you with beady dead little eyes, they were good as egg dispensers, but I took no pleasure in their care nor found any appreciation of their personalities.

Mammilian livestock I can understand advocating for humane, "Logan's Run" style rearing of (get a decent life for a bit and then be brought to a humane slaughter without pain), but for chickens? Fuck 'em. Humanity needs a cheap source of meat and if some level of factory farming is necessary, I'll advocate for low-cost improvements in their QoL but I have few qualms about the suffering of those birds if it's necessary to keep animal protein affordable.

These idiotic faggots haven’t even realized that rational equations break down with infinity as a middle term.

That’s it. That’s the sum of their ethics. If “infinity” is put in the equation, any finite action is justifiable.

This is something most people get over in middle school, and/or in a basic philosophy class. But these idiots are “too smart” for that and so become word salad producers.

No wonder they hate LLMs, as those perfectly replace them.

Superbabies!

I never really read much of the shit these people write because it's boring but this has got me asking some serious questions:

Are they not aware that there is a fairly strong correlation between intelligence and depression? The kind that can't exactly just be whisked away by removing genes related to depression?

Guess not!

I don't object but what's gonna happen to us natural born freaks? It's not like I'm gonna become a 6'6 huwaite devil ubermensch.

Well it’s pretty easy to justify something if you start with the premise that world is definitely going to end soon. If you can argue that something has even the very slightest chance of averting the world ending event, then any ethical objections can be brushed aside for the greater good.
this is just the bog standard jewish temple argument. deciding it was the end of days got the first temple destroyed and jerusalem sacked by nebuchadnezzar. it was what pissed off the romans and made them conquer jerusalem a millenia later. it was what the jews used to guilt trip england into giving them mandatory palestine after the holocaust. "the jewish world is ending" is what jewish society revolves around

This is basically babby's first anti-utilitarian argument. Anyone who wants to promote utilitarianism has to deal with it. The "utility monster" concept is really simple. The philosophy of utilitarianism, in its most basic form, requires the maximization of "happiness" (never mind it is not really measurable).

So presume the existence of this imaginary entity, a creature that gains infinite happiness (or just a really really large amount) from something that requires the extermination of humanity. If you are imagining some kind of giant ball of happiness as the ultimate goal (this is as imaginary as the utility monster itself), you'd have to exterminate humanity, in one of the dumbest trolley problems ever.

The experiment may sound ridiculous but it's not like it doesn't resemble some things in reality. Most utopian cults are based on some degenerate form of utilitarianism.

They don't seem to have gotten past this, or at least not Yuddo. They're operating on something fundamentally broken. You can't expect much of people who get their philosophy from a clumsily written Harry Potter fanfic.
