Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

I need to watch Medaka Box at some point in time

Did the anime cover the entirety manga? It's the kind of series that goes from everyday light hearted fun to absolute insanity.
Tell me about Hidemari Sketch. I read a few reviews and it kind of sounds like Azumanga meets Lucky Star but the girls are younger (?). I see is also a Shaft production.

Is it a funny show? Like does it have Azumanga randomness mixed with LS's various references? Or is it mostly like cute girls with shrill voices doing cute things ala k-on?
Female University art students going through the years. It's extremely heartwarming and cute. I don't remember laughing too hard but it's hard not to smile.

And then the author used the art for Madoka...

Violet Evergarden is literally nothing special. It's a nice watch, and because it's KyoAni the animation and art is top-notch as usual, there's just nothing about it that makes it stand out as "unique" or even beautifully poignant. Think the only time I went "Oh yeah, that's KyoAni magic" was one small scene in episode 7 where Violet is jumping across the lake. That's literally it.

I wish I could be wow'd by beautiful anime again, it was a wonderful feeling back then.

So I'm currently watching Ideon and I'll give my complete thoughts after I finish it and the movies but hot damn is it engaging. Slow burn, but I've always seen that style as leading to better payoffs.

Beginning to prefer it over Eva. But still it might stumble somewhere.

Let's not forget about those widescreen faces!

Can we post the Deathnote Trump thing so people can stop being so gay? The one where Trump gets more than he wants and the Shinigami praises him.

The Baki mangaka is a former self-defense guy who picked up boxing. A lot of Self Defense force guys online are effectively a marine stereotype times 10. GATE effectively shows you the mindset. It’s dude having a laugh, probably because Trump has an actual personality and is emotive.
I had no idea that Trump showed up in Death Note till this day, but I remember this scene. This is the only Inuyashiki legacy alongside ''we were talking about One Piece''.

The more I hear about Baki without actually reading or watching it the funnier it gets.
That's nothing, Yujiro, the same guy, is so strong that at every government in the world has signed a peace treaty with him

This is supposed to be Obama btw, Baki is incredibly retarded and it's funny

It was a special and basically Trump comes across as sly. It’s like 8 years old at this point, but spoilers Trump buys the Deathnote when a journal holder decides to sell it. This pisses off the Shinigami who create new rules in order to kill both the buyer and seller. When Ryuk comes to tell Trump, Trump just gives it back. His goal wasn’t really to use it. Just the threat and moral high ground of sealing away the Deathnote. Ryuk just goes “huh, alright. Wise choice” and fucks off.

I thought it was pretty overrated but there are a number of individual episodes I appreciate. When it first came out I kind of thought it was just plain mediocre but then when I realized what it was actually doing, exploring the multiple different types of love, I appreciated it a lot more. But overall it was just okay and Antarctica from the same season was better anyways.

No mention of Baki Rahen last chapter featuring Yujiro Hanma raping both Musk and Trump?

"Alright, big guy--I'll do it. You think I don't know what it's like to be raped when I'm in the middle of trying to do what's right? Come on, there's a table in the other room that's big enough; we'll make it a one-and-done so we can both get back to more important things. One thing I ask as a favor, though--leave the kid out of it, alright? I'm all the man you need."

...and then the issue ends with them going together into a room and closing the door, only to open the next one with them sitting across from each other having tea or something.

I really don't understand how anybody could be legitimately offended by this. I have spent exactly twenty minutes reading into Baki, and I can already tell that this is not a manga that takes itself terribly seriously. Following on from this, the author is also either not the sort who takes himself too seriously, or he's so autistic he can legobend in his sleep. Either way, it's like Chris Chan, isn't it? If Chris put you into a Sonichu comic so Sonichu could beat you up, would you be upset? No - you'd be impressed by the autistic dedication and creativity, pat him on the head, say "Good job, champ, you showed me," and leave him to play with his markers so you can see what he comes up with next.

I was legitimately offended by the lame line spouted by Musk when threatened with rape. Does that count?

lol who the fuck cares about some mangaka's politics. Bitch still so malding on the ass raping the japs got in ww2 he has the protagonist grandfather single handedly kill and rape all Americans troops in the pacific in ww2.

If anything it's pretty cow worthy to have the Japs be the ones with the Ubermensch despite having WAY WAY LESS body mass than the average American.
This. Japs have zero testosterone, quite literally a nation of soy boys.

I was legit going to write a post about the philosophical shit behind Yujiro and Baki and all that, but then I realized that’s autistic as fuck so I’ll condense it.
Yujiro represents a lot of things, but there are two things he personifies the most. God-like power, and toxic masculinity. He is a being so powerful that none, not even the entirety of the United States, can stand before him without his express permission, and at the same time he is a man who only follows his own path without regard to the destruction such a path causes for those around him. His view is that as he is the strongest, everyone else is by necessity beneath him and for him to do with what he will.
As ‘The Ogre’, Yujiro is what we see as the dark side of man. Petty, jealous, cruel, taking who and what he wants when he wants, and powerful enough that none can stop him. His son Baki represents many things as well, his is the journey of a boy becoming a man, and what he represents is positive masculinity. Baki is caring, kind, lifts others up, and is still so powerful that none dare harm his loved ones. Yujiro is the dark, Baki is the light, and Yujiro dominating everyone up to whole nations is to express the notion that power is what you do with it and that what Yujiro does is wrong. Domination vs compassion, that’s a major conflict in the story where Yujiro is the dominator.
I just wanted you to know that you have convinced me to give Baki a chance! I'm currently watching the TV anime that started in 2001. I like Fist of the North Star and Hajime no Ippo, but I always viewed Baki as gross, pointless, retarded gay-man violence written by a schizo. That said, I really like the Ichi the Killer manga, so I guess what I want to see in my retarded gore stories is good direction. So far Baki seems to meet that criteria!
