The instances I am aware of happened in cultures that heavily used clubs in warfare which in some instances resulted in death from fatal swelling of the brain after being hit in the head. The holes cut in the skull relieved pressure and the proof that these procedures worked is that in many of them the hole that was drilled ended up healing.
