I know the Japanese are a different type of autistic but I've never understood the incredibly hyper-specific nature of Manga. Is the market just so oversaturated they're trying to make something that stands out purely based on absurdity? Are their readers so imaginatively bankrupt and depressed they can't imagine a fantasy without it including getting hit by a bus on the street? Am I just retarded?

Manga is a disposable pop media made on the cheap. You’re getting a phone book-thick magazine every week for like $5. Only a few mangaka are able to make a living, let alone a career, without also destroying their social life and health. As is, the seemingly easiest way to get published is to take tropes that already sell in the hopes of making some sort of income. This has been always true for manga, it’s just right now they’re going through a boom of Isekai tropes a la fantasy novels in the 70’s.
