Woke really comes down to intentional subversion.

Having a black character in a movie or video game is not subversion in itself. For example, a basketball player down on his luck, a drug dealer looking for a big score, someone trying to escape from prison, a watermelon bandit, or any type of criminal would be a perfect spot for a black lead character. Donkey Kong, Mr Game & Watch, the brothers on the cover of NBA 2K are all examples of black protagonists that were made without any form of feminist ideology or what the children and boomers refer to as "woke." There are obviously other examples but I just named a few off the top of my head.

When entire video game studios are taken over by women, SJWs, feminist lesbians and other assorted fags with the sole purpose of destroying video games by putting in queer bipocs protagonists that no one even likes that's woke. Turning Snow White into mud brown is woke. Putting black women in world war II shooters is woke.

The fact that Terminator 2 is your repeated go to reference is proof that it is. In my opinion, Terminator 2 is a rare example of something that wasn't intended to be but became one because people misread it so badly. Kind of like what happened with the original Night of the Living Dead.

Let me rephrase myself. You're acting like Alyx's creation was solely TO fulfill some arbitrary diversity quota. If you feel that way, more power to you. The way you and Stonetoss positioned that argument makes it sound like a strawman with little backing to your claim.

100% this. There is no real argument that these things wouldn’t be rightly called woke if they happened now.

People who disagree just know that they like things that are vulnerable to said criticism, even if it’s in dumb and petty ways, but also probably have friends who are anti-woke so it creates the awkward spot where you have to criticize your friends to defend your favorite product.

And also nobody is consistent. It’s not hard to think of a woker heroine than Alyx that people won’t want to criticize.

You can make the argument that the material is elevated above the notion of an agenda, and that the secret intent doesn’t really matter. I don’t agree tbh, Alyx is not really that edifying a character. She’s just competently portrayed so I agree with the Effective Propaganda line, even if that’s often a copout.

I use Terminator 2 as an example cause most people, even the culture warriors would consider the idea that idea that Terminator 2 is woke to be ridiculous.
However, if they applied the same criteria they apply to modern cinema and games, they would quickly discover that it, in fact, is woke as well.

To the extent you care about this or actually see this in the film is up to you. But it’s out there. Personally I think it’s a larp. And sort of ridiculous considering how many cops died in The Terminator doing their jobs.

The reason why this is dumb is because this has been a long process of forcing gross degeneracy and has been going on before most of us were born. Objectively and by the parameters it was and is woke. The only sense in which its not is that the current lot moved on to a more advanced form.

Many 'anti-woke' are hypocrites pining for stage 3 cancer back when it stayed in the colon. 'None of my business, if it leaves me alone I leave it alone.' That situation is never coming back.

Yes everything for the last 80 years has had some element of subversion in it. The way it works is presenting you with something you like or seems normal and then stealthily changing it, and lowering your guard to the subverted content as you see it more and more.

How do you not know this and post on KF? Especially in a thread about a political cartoonist.

The people who don’t see HL2 as woke should really be arguing it isn’t woke enough to matter. Alyx did not inspire many copycats, or none I can think of, and the game has its own merits. Her Black Science Man Dad did, or maybe he’s effectively irrelevant to that too and just a symptom. You can’t exclude it from being counted at all but you can easily disregard that aspect of it.

The other route is to agree and amplify because many “ideologically pure” anti-wokes are pretty inconsistent and will make bad calls if pressed.

Even though I agree with it many others who do are very shallow or don’t live in the real world so they don’t process nuance too well. But no one here I’m sure.
