You could also not agitate your much more powerful neighbor by working with, in essence, their sworn enemy in NATO. Don't give a nation you share a physical border with a reason to think you're going to do something stupid on/with said border.

Don't do joint training exercises with them, don't publicly meet with them, don't flirt with joining their org - just make it work with your neighbor.
