detroit style has actual american history behind it, starting when the first pizza maker to do it was watching local Ford Plants throw away transmission pans that weren't going to be used in the 40s because of the shift to war manufacturing. The pans were just the right size to stack in an oven, allowed for a thicker crust, and also could withstand the heat due to being used on the cars and designed to catch hot oil.
