Jesus's sacrifice is not a get of jail free card. The whole point is that you're supposed to continually work on improving yourself to grow closer to God.

yes it is, because as humans, we are by our very nature sinful. it is not possible for us to be perfect. what it is possible for us to do is lead a life that goes with the honest internal intent, and outward external actions, to lead a life as free of sin as possible. if you believe that verse is literal, how is it that it then applies to the rest of humanity?

we are charged by christ to do the absolute best that we, as imperfect humans who cannot live a sinless life as christ did, can to try our hardest to live up to his teachings and commands. our shortcomings are our sins, and that is why we still need His forgiveness, even the most pious. what purpose do you argue this for?

If it were possible, Christ and his sacrifice and the forgiveness and cleansing that came with it wouldn't have been necessary. It's pretty easy to understand especially given the context of the old testament and people failing to follow the rules or following the letter of the law but not the spirit of it.
