I feel like one of the things that killed New Atheism was the discovery of just how many Atheists were just against the religion they were born into. So, so many of the fedora-tippers were all-in on shitting on Christianity, but would run away or get huffy if you brought up Judaism or Islam.

After all, cults usually fund themselves by exploiting their members, and uneducated speds don't typically have a lot of money. Most cult leaders are not in it for a Manson-style life of squatting in trailer parks and eating whatever their hippie followers dug out of the garbage. Scientology obviously has some rich and famous members, you mentioned Aum Shinrikyo of course, and I was recently reading Manhattan Cult Story which is about another one that specifically targets rich, urbane, young professionals.

Probably the real answer is that the Zizian conception of all life possessing equal moral value isn't really that sincere, or if it is, Jack's evil enough to consider killing a human being to be as morally negligible as stepping on ants in the shower - rather, his shower was of greater moral importance because four ants had to die for that, whereas only one guy (Mr. Lind) had to die over their nonpayment of rent. But it seems like the only real way to move forward and live your life while maintaining this belief is that Jack's totally evil and human life is equivalent to ants in his eyes. And he's the godlike doublegood and so his life matters more because he's saving the world or whatever he thinks he does.
