I live in a weathy part of a major city, and there's only one authentic Mexican restaurant within a 30 minute drive. We probably have no less than 40 Salvadoran/Honduran/Peruvian restaurants in the same radius.

It seems to come down to where your recent-ish immigrants are coming from. There's a Myanmar/Burmese restaurant near me, and a Nepalese place. We also have a Nepalese day spa, where they rub olive oil into your scalp...and good fucking luck trying to shampoo it out later.

I just learned something new: smoking/nicotine raises blood sugar in diabetics. It can also interfere with the function of insulin, so insulin-injecting diabetics need to increase their dosage if they're smoking.

My very mixed and solidly middle class neighborhood sees a lot of residents sharing their VERY nice homes with recent immigrants who are either family or close friends. I obviously can’t speak for anyone other than those I see or speak with but the work ethic in those people is very strong. And many of them, when not working, are taking classes to improve their job skills.

I’m not trying to paint a picture of universal sweetness and light; there are several unabashed assholes around but the larger community does their best to hammer that shit out of them. The community remains safe; I feel comfortable walking around any time of day or night and our local crime rate is very low.

I have lived in less affluent neighborhoods, the ones Salah and Chantal might be able to afford and it’s a lot tougher for recent immigrants to get ahead. Their local ‘community support’ is less likely to help them fit in than to suggest ways to screw over people and the system. I have a feeling Salah would fit in neighbourhoodd like that all too easily m.

But this all irrelevant; he’s not getting into Canada save as a tourist.
