It is absolutely believable to me that Nick wouldn't lock any of his safes. Neither Nick nor Kayla seem to be able to step back and look at what a farce they’ve turned their lives into, or to see what overgrown children they are, or to ponder whether they are fit to parent five children when they themselves are behaving like toddlers.

Their life sounds like an absolute nightmare to me. But the kids have it far, far worse. Causing their children immense, prolonged, avoidable pain is something Nick and Kayla should feel tremendous guilt for. They should be working to make amends for that.
