Having also taken the same drug for a short period before getting the fuck off it, I can only imagine it's useful for people who are highly strung, manic etc. but also feeling depressed and need something of a mood stabiliser, because man does it turn relatively 'normal' people into zombies who, along with still being just as depressed as they were before taking the drug, no longer possess the will to do anything about it. And because it does have some sort of numbing effect, it's easy for users fall into a habit of thinking that the zombie state is better than what came before, because at least they aren't feeling acutely sad. I feel a little sorry for him, not that it justifies his shitty character, but because the anti-depressant industry is fucked up and I like dumb retards more than scummy biomed execs.
