As an example, the most popular one @Caveman is referring to (Marble Hornets) was a relatively early series involving Slenderman, which was an instrumental/foundational take on the slenderman's internet mythos.

"To the ark" was an antagonistic and mysterious channel/figure in the Marble Hornets ARG who made weird ass, 2spooky4me videos as a way to encrypt messages to his associates over the internet, of which the audience could watch and try to decipher.

A common term used to help explain it is 'unfiction', like how 'non-fiction' is "real", fiction is "fake", 'unfiction' is meant to be 'fake' masquerading as 'real' for stronger emotional impact, akin to a mockumentary. You can think of it similarly to a mockumentary film like "This Is Spinal Tap" or anything of that nature.
