Plagued Waifu culture - Cartoon fuckpillows and the men (and women) who love them

I have seen waifu dinners for years on valentines day, and I consider them to have always been ironic since the tradition stated in Japan in the mid-2000s. It is cringy because that is the intention, as it is self-deprecating humor that says "I have no one to be with on valentine's day but my waifu."

I thought they were done with self-awareness of how cringy they are, but then of course you end up inviting more people that are into actual waifudom.

These videos are saved from Nico Nico Douga, a Japanese video site, from 2006 and 2007. Thought it would be interesting to share them.

I just don't understand it. Like waifu shit always dumbfounded me. How could anyone who doesn't have an actual diagnosed mental illness say some big-tittied anime girl is his TRUE and HONEST girlfriend?
A person who lives in a land that most likely still has traces of nuclear fallout from the time they started acting like cunts and got owned.

The phenomenon is not THAT new.

(Instances of worshippers showing clear signs of sexual agitation while praying to Mary or a female saint are well-known. Note also that iconographically -- blue cloak, standing on a shell --, Mary is strongly linked to Aphrodite/Venus.)

What IS new about this Waifu phenomenon is the replacement of mythological or divine beings with characters from mass-produced entertainment. Popular culture has its historical links to religion, though, as the earliest instances of "comic strips" were illustrations in churches depicting stories from the Bible to make them accessible to illiterate peasants.

off topic, but this legit sounds really interesting. you have any specific cases in mind when you say that?
To be honest, the first that came to my mind was a fictional example: That one fanatical monk (forgot his name) from Eco's "The Name of the Rose" who nearly went orgasmic while prostrating himself to an image of Mary.

Umberto Eco researched his novels very well. In the writings of medieval mystics, sexual metaphors abound.

The person who posted this is a girl BTW.
I like to play a little game on reddit where any time I see someone referring to themselves as lesbian, I click their profile and look for the stubble. I'd guess that 9/10 times my suspicions are confirmed.
Considering how much more popular this hobby is with guys and that this is the "girl" who resigned from modding their forum on the first page:

I think it's probably safe to assume most of the alleged females in their group are guys trying to be the waifus they want to see in the world.

Great post, Ecstasy of St. Theresa by Bernini also comes to mind.

Hold up nigga. Are you actually comparing worship (religion eh) to weebs wanting to bang 2D? Or are you defending it because if so I must laugh.

I think he meant waifuism and other more-or-less unhealthy fiction obsessions have always been a thing, because stories have always resonated with us. Basically people didn't wait for Japan catgirls to sperg about irrelevant shit. As a man once said, autism never changes.

Its a chinese cartoon versus religion. I don't care much about religion but its a far more established...er fictional lore? I don't think its comparable to fapping/making cringe AF videos of a cat girl or best girl "x" or w/e weebs fap 2 this season.

I do, kind of. :neckbeard:

I think the only reason people didn't fap to catgirls back then is they didn't exist.

I never understood the waifu thing. I originally thought it was just a joke, but after reading this thread and finding out that people actually do this shit for real, I feel ashamed to be an anime fan and my faith in humanity is declining even further.

Now at the risk of power leveling, I will admit my first crushes were Sailor Mercury and Ada Wong, but the key difference was that I was a little kid at the time and didn't really know any better, I was just a kid playing pretend. However, these hardcore waifu types have no excuse.

They're grown adults, they should know the difference between fantasy and reality (and if they do know the difference, that's just even sadder) or at least keep their waifu to themselves, instead of bragging about it on the internet or waving their body pillows around in public.

If you're a small child and you have a crush on a fictional character or have a pretend relationship with them, that's fine and dandy. But if you're a grown man and you have a pretend relationship with a fictional character, that is not okay. It's creepy and disturbing, especially if displayed in public. Having a shrine to a fictional cartoon woman is not a sign of love, it's a sign of mental illness.

I still suspect that Catholics (who are by far my favorite Christians) have introduced worship of Mary and all these female saints so they could love divine beings without feeling gay.

It's literally in the Catechism that nuns are the brides of Christ. Sure, you could call that a metaphor, but combined with the vow of celibacy, it sounds all too literal.

http://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p123a9p4.htm

923 "Virgins who, committed to the holy plan of following Christ more closely, are consecrated to God by the diocesan bishop according to the approved liturgical rite, are betrothed mystically to Christ, the Son of God, and are dedicated to the service of the Church."464 By this solemn rite (Consecratio virginum), the virgin is "constituted . . . a sacred person, a transcendent sign of the Church's love for Christ, and an eschatological image of this heavenly Bride of Christ and of the life to come."465

(So if you bang a nun, you're literally cucking God.)
