Back when I was teenager, it felt like liberals believed the following:

* Sensible but generous economic policies that prioritize helping the poor.
* Holding corrupt business leaders to account.
* Peace and diplomacy as foreign policy, standing up to the military industrial complex and resisting forever wars.

* Fair and equal treatment for everyone regardless of race, gender or origentation.

Maybe it wasn't always like that, maybe I was just naive, but that's how it felt. Nowadays, with people like Bob, it feels like:

* Poor people aren't a priority. You can raise awareness of their plight but as long as the GDP is going up they'll be fine. The free market will fix it.
* Corrupt business is just capitalism. We'll get rid of capitalism eventually, until then there's no point bothering.
* Interventionary wars are good. We have a duty to wage war on tyrants and protect the rules based international order.
* Safety is far more important than freedom. It's no big deal to lose a little bit of liberty for security.
* We have to treat people differently to make up for historical and modern wrongs. It is necessary that some people are treated better than others.
* If you're a private business, we live in a free market and you're allowed to do whatever you want.
* Hate speech and misinformation is so uniquely dangerous that we have to intervene to silence it. Freedom of speech is not freedom of reach.

I absolutely abhor everything on the second list but I tried to express it as generously as possible to steelman the arguement. It seems like modern "liberals" are about as far from what most people would cal "liberal" that it's actually shocking they're still using the same label. They seem to shift between neocon and libertarian ideals on a whim without even flinching, and don't notice any contradiction. I've heard it called "Metropolitan liberalism/progressiveness" because it seems like it's particularly geared to benefit the desires of affluent Urbanites.

This is why, to me, it feels more and more like "liberal" is code for "a fucking asshole."
