Now people will know he's both dangerous and cool, like Hannibal. And he posted about it with pictures so everyone will know he's just like Hannibal. If Zack got into SOA/Mayans, he'd be one of the losers that buys the fake cuts and thinks it makes him look like/be a legitimate badass.

it's edgy and was in a TV show he watches.
Ahem. Movie.

His new toy is not as useful as he thought.

Like Achilles, Zach turned extra badass because he was dunked in a river.

Yeah, it's a meme knife. It's funny because the company that makes it also produces a great many good knives and he chose a shit one because of a movie. There are a couple traditional knives that have a hook style from specific regions that I assume have a specific purpose for them. They look cool so they get designed and made when they aren't practical for everyday use. Serrations are also suited to a few specific tasks. A lot of people like them because you can still use them to tear when your knife is dull as shit and most people never sharpen their knives. It's why steaks most steak knives are serrated. It's horrible to watch good beef get torn under serrations.

I'm not a knife sperg in the sense that I own a ton of them and know all the brands and designers. After having lots of shitty tools as a young man I've spent the last decade researching, testing, and buying the right tool for the right job. Maintining your quality tools is also important, so I learned to sharpen. I also have a blacksmith friend who got me interested in learning about steels, carbides, hardness, etc. Before I knew it I was a knife sperg.

Zach falls for the gimmicks that the edgiest of teenage boys fall for.

they do ..and that specific purpose is usually around farming ; digging up roots, razing and threshing grasses, cutting branches (think about a modern pole saw) and stuff like that
a lot of "cool martial arts" weapons are repurposed farm tools. Either for the economics of it - when you are a farmer, you grab what you have and it's not like you are made of resources (hmm, Zack could learn from that) or in a quasi-feudal system as a farmer you might not be allowed to own overthrowy type weapons (sort of like the "it's legal" baseball bat carry theme that the rainbow-hair warriors went through a few years back)

Also useful at sea for cutting rope, nets, that sorta thing. (No surprise that a lot of hookbill styles originate from Pacific island regions.)

so... after being dunked in a warm water river, he realized all his clothes were hin and soft - ie more amenable to survival in a warm water river scenario
You think after that, Zach would have chosen a dive knife. Zach, I suggest the XS fog cutter.
and for zack (honestly for divers too) I recommend the chisel tip.
for divers b/c it's a hazard when entangled and you are deploying it/sheathing it that close to the body, esp in glove and suit
for Zach, because you are too retarded to get out of flatwater

the bonus is it also works as shears (an it doesn't have finger holes) for all zach's snakegift wrapping needs

heh, ya know I have a one hand opening folding karambit and that's what I use it on deck for...make a bight and draw. I like the finger loop for stability in swells. It's really not dissimilar to dealing with branches and stuff where you want the blade to sort of trap into the workpiece as opposed to slide off (good for a slice)
At first i didn't like the underhand grip for it, but then I kind of found that after the line lets go, it's my fist going first in the direction of travel, not the point
and with the curved blade, the point isn't actually facing me either
it'd be cool if they made one with a knot spike

Is he bragging that his new knife shipped from the factory really sharp?

But you can sharpen anything, right? Knives get dull and you have to sharpen them or they don't work as well and crush the tissue/broccoli you're cutting with them.

Please help I am a non-penis woman and don't understand knife autism.

I have been to the mall many times, and I have purchased a knife just because it looked cool, but that was a knife the same size and shape as a peanut and I have it on the ring with my mailbox key for opening packages.

Zach has only recently started brusing his teeth.do you think he can really be bothered to sharpen a serrated knife

an no Z-baby just because there's a little plain edge at the tip doesn't make it semi-serrated
sk2.pngsk1.png

he keeps talking about how sharp it is for cutting paper, opening boxes and wrapping presents - very utilitarian things...now if only there was a knife for that kind of...utility
hmm.

I hesitate to mention it b/c they are nice and Zack is a tard, but the fastback II is great

and probably the right choice for him..if he actually cared about anE DC cutting tool (we all know he doesn't)
it's got in handle blade storage for his precision surgical cannibal cuts without sharpening
a line cutter feature for his kayak wet exits

BUT

The big drawback is it's one hand gravity opening (it's not OTF, but a gravity folder) -- which is great for normal people who have a hand on the workpiece to own it
but terrible for normal people if zach were to own it b/c
1) Zack wouldn't stop flipping it opened and closed pretending he's in rumblefish - the incessant clacking would drive everyone insane
2) somebody would have to drive him to the hospital when he tries some fetishized flip trick he saw in a cartoon

You'd be surprised how shitty some knives come from the factory, but Spyderco is generally good. I also went on knifecenter while I was on the can today and looked at all the $100-150 Spydercos and laughed at the number of good knives Heather could have bought instead. And, I don't even like VG10 steel much.

Yeah you can sharpen serrated and recurve style blades. It just takes more specialized stones beyond a bench stone or little pocket stone. For recurves you'll want skinny, triangular, or rod/cone shaped stones/machinist's files. You can also use the edge of wheel if you have a grindstone machine like a Tormek. You really want a cone shape for serrations and you have to go each individual scallop. You can use the edge of the wheel trick for wide scallops like bread knives serrations too, but I find it annoying to get each scallop bevel even and pretty. I'm more of a sharpening sperg than knife sperg. You could probably use chamfered corners of a bench stone for recurves with some practice, but I got irritated trying and just bought a couple slip stones I'd been looking for an excuse to buy anyway.

Something like this from DMT is what you want for serrations:

Kiwifarmers : Here are some utility/safety/history point that inform proper use of the tool
Zackie : FUCK that! Did a scary villain use one to carve people up in a movie or NOT!?!
