Green Cards can be revoked for almost any reason. Green Cards are just another form of Visa for a foreign national. Albeit, one that allows an indefinite stay and the right to work. You still are not a citizen and can still be deported. Some effort has been made to try and make them "Citizenship Lite" in the code, but alot of that is still incredibly discretionary, and what constitutes a breach of the code is largely up to the State Department and not the Courts.
Some versions of the story say he has a green card others say student visa. Can't be both. Either way he's going home.
